Father’s Day is coming up on the 19th of June, and if you’re stuck for ideas on what to do with your dad, a movie marathon can never go wrong. Set up the living room as a movie theatre, prepare some snacks and popcorn, pour your father’s favourite soda, and sit back and relax.
There are various fatherly films from which you can choose to celebrate your dad this Father’s Day. You’ll be able to create a movie list for your father that includes everything from action films to science fiction, comedies, and cartoons.
Some of the movies will make you two laughs until your stomach hurts, while others will bring tears to your eyes, so make sure you have a tissue box handy. Without further ado, here are the movies that have been specially chosen for you and your father.
Fatherhood (2021)
Fatherhood, starring Kevin Hart, is about his character becoming a single father after his wife dies unexpectedly. That situation left him with the most difficult job and responsibility of being a single parent. He is torn between caring for his baby girl himself and entrusting her to extended family. While many are concerned about him caring for his daughter alone, he does his best despite the challenges. Yes, you can pass that tissue to your daddy and yourself while watching this flick together.
Onward (2020)
Dan Scanlon wrote and directed this Pixar film to express his grief about the death of his father when he and his older brother were children. In Onward, two elf brothers living in a magical world, Ian and Barley, are dealing with the loss of their father as they grow older. On Ian’s 16th birthday, they are unexpectedly gifted with a magical diamond that can temporarily resuscitate their father. However, things did not go as planned, and they now must embark on a quest to complete the spell to see their father for one last time.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017)
This is a must-see for Father’s Day if your beloved father is a Marvel fan. In this sequel to the 2014 comedy superhero Space Opera/Space Western film Guardians of the Galaxy, Chris Pratt plays Peter Quill aka ‘Star-Lord’, who discovers that his biological father is very different from the man who raised him. Watch how their story unfolds while enjoying the funny scenes with the talking raccoon and a cameo from David Hasselhoff.
Daddy’s Home (2015)
The plot of this American comedy starring Will Ferrell as a mild-mannered stepfather and Mark Wahlberg as the biological father revolves around the stepfather’s struggle to be loved by his stepchildren. Everything is fine until the biological father, Dusty Mayron, arrives—at which point everything falls apart. Throughout the film, your father will be laughing his head off as he discovers who wins in the end.
Interstellar (2014)
Former NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) pilot Cooper, played by Matthew McConaughey, was sent through a wormhole and across the galaxy to determine which among three planets could be humanity’s new home. He didn’t realise that the timing out there is much slower than on Earth when he left his beloved children behind. By the time he returned, his daughter was already way older than him. Find out what happens by watching Interstellar together, a fascinating film that will astound both you and your father.
Taken (2008)
Looking for a movie in which a dad goes through all manner of evil and obstacles to save his beloved daughter? Well, look no further. In Taken, Liam Neeson plays a retired government agent who uses his special skills to track down and rescue his daughter (Maggie Grace) after she is kidnapped and auctioned off into a sex trafficking ring while on a vacation in Paris. While you’re at it, continue with Taken 2 and Taken 3. Two thumbs up for great action nonstop!
The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
This film exemplifies what it means to be a dedicated father. Based on a true story, Will Smith stars as Chris Gardner, a down-on-his-luck salesman who co-stars with his real-life son, Jaden Smith. After his wife leaves him, he is left to care for their five-year-old boy while they are forced to dwell in homeless shelters. Chris stays a caring father to his son despite all of the challenges, and the ending is likely to make you and your dear dad tear up.
Finding Nemo (2003)
Would your father swim the entire ocean to find his child like Marlin the clownfish in Finding Nemo did? This Pixar classic, as the title suggests, is about Marlin searching for his son, Nemo, after they became separated at the bottom of the “boat.” As they strive to find each other, you and your father will go on a chaotic, amusing, and moving journey. It’s both amusing and heartwarming.
Daddy Day Care (2003)
In this comedy, Eddie Murphy plays Charlie Hinton, a stay-at-home dad who has lost his job. It all started when he was struggling to care for his young son and decided to open a home childcare centre with a friend. The childcare centre is suddenly doing well and attracting more children. While he may have to deal with mischievous children and other obstacles, what matters most to him is that he can still spend time with and care for his son.
Big Daddy (1999)
Sonny (Adam Sandler) unexpectedly becomes a father figure to an abandoned young boy (jointly played by Dylan and Cole Sprouse). Sonny ends up teaching the kid some unusual things because he’s a bit childish himself. In the end, the boy makes Sonny more mature, and the father-son relationship is strengthened. This comedy is a must-see if your father needs a good laugh. You may even shed a tear together by the end.
