8 Meaningful Ways to Celebrate Father’s Day

fatherday

Father’s Day is coming. And aside from your dad’s birthday, now is the time to celebrate the man who has raised and brought you up into the world. You may have read dozens of articles about father’s day activities, but give these ones a try if you haven’t thought of them until now. Here are 8 meaningful ways to celebrate Father’s Day.

Walk Down Memory Lane

There is nothing more nostalgic than digging up precious moments from the past. A good Father’s Day activity is to visit your dad’s old childhood haunts. His old school, his favourite playground, even his old childhood home. This is easier of course if you live nearby these places. But then again, you can always schedule a road-trip back to your dad’s hometown to make it truly memorable.

Blast from the Past

Now that you’ve helped your dad relive his best childhood moments, time to do the same for yours. Specifically places where you and your dad have visited when you were a younger. These can be old family vacations, playgrounds, amusement parks, first days of kindergarten and even in the backyard of an old house your family used to live in. Just be sure to ask for the current owner’s permission.

Recapture the Magic

In honour of Father’s Day, let us recreate those childhood moments from the past that we shared with our dads. Now, while you’re walking down memory lane, don’t forget to replicate those old family photos from when you were young. Dig out those old dusty family albums and thumb through the pages. There is no better moment for some throwback than Father’s Day.

Reach for the Skies

Some of you may be able to relate to this, probably the earliest memory of you and your dad was when he took you out to fly a kite. Acres of green grass as far as the eyes can see, cloudy skies and wind blowing through your hair. Older generations may be able to relate to this much more. But even if you or your dad have never touched a kite in your life, perhaps now’s the time to try.

Turn the Heat Up

Perhaps because it heralds back to our prehistoric origins, but there is nothing more manly than tending to a blazing barbeque grill. In fact, some might even say it’s a paternal rite of passage to start a fire and cook meat. Your dad will definitely love grilling up a storm for the entire family. But if your dad isn’t into that sort of that thing maybe you should take over the grilling duties and let your dad relax on his special day.

All Fun and Games

Let’s be honest, men are naturally competitive. So, sometimes you have to satisfy those cravings in a healthy environment. And nothing satisfies a father’s competitive streak than an at-home game night. Pictionary, charades, heads-up, trivia. These are all just some good games to include in the activity. And don’t forget to let your dad win a few rounds—it is his day, after all.

Into the Woods

Take your Father’s Day celebration out into the great outdoors with some on-foot expeditions into Mother Nature. Much like grilling, there is something strangely visceral about going back to our primitive roots. So, enjoy your time with your dad traversing the wilderness. Go forest bathing, bird watching, camping, etc.—really embrace the fresh air. And if the rest of the family wants to join in, the more the merrier.

Do His Favourite Thing

If none of these activities are a good fit for your father, you can always, as they say, improvise. Find out what your dad’s favourite activity is and make it an entire event. You can even make a surprise out of it. Because chances are your dad may have some very specific—and even secret—interests that he keeps hidden away from the family. Sometimes dads can be a bit shy about sharing their hobbies. But you’d be surprised to know that there are many layers to your dad. And there is no better time than now to get to know him better.

Celebrate Your Dad This Father’s Day

The sky is the limit when it comes to what you want to do for your dad on Father’s Day. Bungee-jumping, paint-ball, haunted house, escape room, zip-lining, rock-climbing—just use your imagination. Your dad will be happy just spending the day with his kids. After all, the true meaning of Father’s Day is not really in the activities, but in the precious memories you make along the way.
