‘My Children Gave Me Direction, Changed My Life,’ Actor Fizzy Aziz says on Father’s Day

If you’ve been watching Astro’s Awesome TV lately, you would have noticed Fizzy Aziz in the drama series Kiblat Yang Hilang which aired throughout the Hari Raya Puasa period recently.

An up-and-coming actor with a string of local TV dramas and two international films to his name, Fizzy is one of the few Malaysian screen personalities who is also a father of four children ─ a daughter at 6 years old, two boys aged 4 and 2, and his “princess” as he calls her, his youngest daughter who is just 3 months old and to whom he attributes his change of stars.

He has been married for 7 years, he says.

“My wife Norfazila was in the civil service before but she is a fulltime stay-at-home mum now because I told her she doesn’t have to work anymore as it is my responsibility to take care of the family.

It was love at first sight, he confesses about how they met, and till this very day, “She is my spirit, my soul, my strength and my confidante for everything that makes me sad or happy.”

Fizzy’s Film Career

Fizzy is a freelance actor and also a stunt performer. His recent stunt job as stand-in was for the lead heroine in the 2018 Bollywood comedy/romance Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi. His stunt job was to ride on a bike, race on superbikes and he had to jump on a boat.

Here is Fizzy posing with the female lead dressed as her to perform some hair-raising stunts in her place. Fizzy is also a Silat exponent so he is very capable of performing rough scenes.

In the 2019 Hong Kong-Malaysia movie collaboration called Red Storm, Fizzy played the bad boy role of a gangster named Andy in the police-action film.  Here you can see him looking very menacing in the opening sequences.

His other roles in Malaysian TV dramas and telemovies include the recent Raya offerings on Astro, TV3 and RTM such as Kiblat Yang Hilang, Ibu Belum Mati, and past ones like Ryan Aralyn, Kisah Sebenar Seseorang, Kampung Si Rabun, Pulut Kuning VS Sushi Salmon, Single Terlalu Lama and many others, not to mention the soon-to-be-released Kalung on RTM.  His next drama slated for shooting also on RTM will be Drama Tok Guru.

Humble Beginnings

Although a majority of Fizzy’s roles portray the bad guy, he’s done a number of good guy roles and even comedy. And what you see on screen is not always what you get.

“In actual fact, I am a very sentimental person,” as he says.

Acting wasn’t on the cards in the early days for Fizzy. When he first got married, he was working as a technician in a factory.

“I worked hard to provide for my family because I always had the aspiration to give them what others are able to get in life. So I knew I needed to take a chance to change my life.”

His chance came when a friend recommended him to go into screen productions because when he was a child, he had always loved watching TV dramas and even had some experience in theatre in school.

When he pushed himself into acting and got the job, his first roles on TV were just as an extra ─ no dialogue ─ but he studied how the main actors acted, practiced in front of a mirror, took advice and was always willing to learn from those more experienced than him.

Even when he got his big break, he never wavered from wanting to learn and thus received the benefit of mentorship from other more established actors.

“Being humble, disciplined and respectful is the key to success,” he says.

“Everyday, when I go to work, I say in my heart that I must find rezeki (sustenance) for my children and wife. I am thankful to God that he has given me a chance to be an actor and taken my family’s life to the next stage.”

Fizzy Aziz ─ the Family Man

And so on Father’s Day, this humble father talks about how he appreciates his family and how it was they who gave him the desire to become a better man. Here he answers in his own words.

1. Motherhood: You recently had a baby girl? You call her “my princess”. Tell us why you describe her that way?

On his off-days, Fizzy makes sure he spends quality time with his family.

Fizzy Aziz: She is the only child where I was able to go into the labour room and see her delivered.

When I first saw her face, I noticed her attitude was different from the others, she was so different but in a good way. She learns very fast.

I always play “aum cak” with her, and when she smiles and laughs, her dimples are so cute. After she was born, my life totally changed, I had many jobs in drama. These were big jobs with big character roles.

When my eldest child came into my life, my attitude and principles in life totally changed. Before her, I was always thinking about myself first.

But after becoming a father, I put her before myself. She is always in my heart. As a result, I feel sad when she is sad or when she cries because she cannot get what she wants.

2. Motherhood: With your busy schedule, how do you make time for your children and wife?

Beach time for his family and just having fun in the sun and sand!

Fizzy Aziz: For me, Family Comes First, no matter how busy I may get. I always make sure to make time for my children and wife.

I don’t want to miss the opportunity of watching them grow up, like the first time they say their first word, the first time they ride a bicycle.

On my off-days, I make sure I bring them out, or I play with them at home. For my wife and kids, I never forget their birthdays, our anniversary, or Mother’s Day. We must celebrate these important dates.

3. Motherhood: How has fatherhood changed you as a person? What have you learnt from being a father?

Fatherhood has changed Fizzy’s life by 100%.

Fizzy Aziz: Fatherhood has changed my life 100%. Suddenly you realise the responsibility is so big and different.

We must take care of wife and children, we must take care of their needs, their feelings, we must SACRIFICE ─ that is the No: #1 thing about being a father.

In front of our children, we don’t let them know of our worries, we pretend to be happy but we try to solve the problem and never let them find out the struggles we have.

4. Motherhood: What are your hopes, wishes and aspirations for your family? What are the values you have instilled in them?

At the core of all his hopes and desires is his fierce love for his family.

Fizzy Aziz: For me, being a good father is a worthy aspiration for any man. Striving to be the best that I can be as a dad is making me into a better man.

My hope is I want to take care of my wife and children with happiness. For my wife, I want to give her all my affection.

For my children, I want to see them go to university. Religion is important for them too and I want to teach them to know their religion well.

The values that I am showing them is ─ no matter how you may struggle in your life, if you have a dream and you work hard towards it ─ your dream will come true.

I am inspired by my own father. I look at how hard he strived for his family. He never said no to us when we were kids.

When I was in school, whatever I asked for, he would give.  We are not from a rich family but he would try his best to get what we wanted.

I always encourage my family members to be more responsible towards each other, to love, respect, be closer and to care for one another so that when I am not around anymore, they will always love each other as a family.
