Ease Into Baby Bathtime | Rubber duck, or Sing A Song?

A woman wears many hats throughout the day. From being the primary caregiver to a housekeeper that keeps the home spick and span, financier who balances the family’s expenses and creative ways to stretch the shrinking Ringgit, wife who enamours her man, a filial daughter to both sets of parents, and a dedicated staff who meets deadlines and the company/client’s expectations – you name it, she’s probably done it to some extent.

All these different roles take a toll, but there is fulfilment in weaving through life and all the challenges it throws at you.

As a working mum, I say the satisfaction of putting my baby to sleep is second to none. After a long day at work, going home is a welcome change, and the sight of my baby’s toothless smile melts away the weariness.

First come the cuddles. I’m sure every mother loves the smell of their baby. Mine loves to stretch and grab a fistful of my (already thin head of) hair, and stare at me adoringly. In moments like this, I cherish the connection and often wonder what is going through his little mass of grey, and what he would say if he could talk.

A spot of nursing takes place next while I sing him some lullabies that have been sung for as long as I can remember. The gentle sucking motion while he holds onto boobies for dear life – what would I give to have the little bundle of joy in my arms, in this moment, for eternity!

Did you know that it is no longer appropriate to sing “Baa Baa Black Sheep” and “Ten Little Indians” due to its racist undertones? Oh, how times have changed!

Our favourite time of the day together has to be bath time! While he is too young to be splashing, the little one makes no surprise of what he likes (head massages, water trickling down his belly, to name a few). My quest for the perfect product to use during this intimate activity came to an end when we tried Cetaphil Baby Bath and Wash which focuses on nurturing the child’s skin.

Beyond cleaning, bath time is perfect for you to get to know your baby’s personality and growth. As you lovingly clean your baby, you’ll be in awe at how fast those razor thin nails grow, not to mention how heavy and tall baby has grown. One of the best moments has to be when the baby can sit up on their own as this signifies a milestone! Don’t forget to check and make sure that their skin is well taken care of. Healthy skin on a baby is supple, smooth and glowing.

In our house, the guardian of bathroom is the supreme Rubber Duck. It holds fort and during bath time with our little one, the Rubber Duck serves as a distraction, toy, loyal companion – anything that the little one imagines!

We found these to be really helpful in making bath time relaxing and pleasant for the kids.

Toys

Those that float and squeak are the best. Work your baby’s digits as they squeeze the toys in delight. Play act with dinosaurs, balls, toy soldiers – anything goes. Let your baby take the lead on this.

Containers

Raid your kitchen and give new life to containers that have seen better days. Children love using these containers to scoop water from the tub, or wait for it to fill up with water. Sometimes, just staring at the water in these containers can keep them occupied. Go figure.

Singing

Do you have a go-to song in the shower? We looked on Youtube for inspiration and it did not disappoint. Now, we have a repertoire of songs in Malay, English and Mandarin to keep bath time going. Did you know that singing is one of the few exercises that help children acquire a language naturally? Learning body parts and actions in 3 languages is a breeze in our household!

Bubbles

Foam, bubbles, whatever you call it, they work miracles. Gather them and style your hair to tease your baby into giggles – it always work! Use them to draw alphabets or digits for a spot of learning. Blow them into the air and watch them float. There are so many ways to engage your child with it!

Catch and throw

Sit your baby in the bathtub comfortably, and play catch and throw with their favourite toys. Better if these toys squeak, flashlights, or protrudes so you can work sensory play into bath time.
