8 Safety Tips for Your Kids During Balik Kampung

Balik Kampung poster

Balik Kampung is a joyful time, especially when you’re taking your kids back to celebrate a special occasion like Hari Raya with all of the people you love.

However, when millions of other people would be travelling the same routes as you, the traffic can be extremely congested. My friend experienced an 18-hour long drive to Kelantan last year Raya, which normally takes only about 8 hours!

Yet, it’s just something that we must all be ready for to Balik Kampung during peak time. And if you have young kids travelling together, it’s important to take the time to prepare for the journey.

Safety should also always be a priority to keep everyone safe and the trip enjoyable for all. Without proper planning, the trip can quickly become a nightmare of crying, tantrums, and boredom.

That is something that no parent would want, I believe. Hence, to make your next trip with children as safe and pleasant as possible, here are some helpful tips to bear in mind while you plan.

Teach Kids Essential Safety Guidelines

You should teach kids about essential safety tips while traveling, such as wearing a seatbelt at all times, not distracting the driver, and not leaving the car without an adult. Kids should also be taught to never leave the car with a stranger, even if the stranger offers them candy or other treats.

When on the road, inform your kids about the importance of following the rules of the road, such as obeying speed limits, not tailgating, and not engaging in any type of distracted driving.

Make sure kids understand that their safety is the top priority and that following these rules is essential to keeping everyone safe on a road trip.

Plan A Route in Advance

Planning a route helps to ensure a smoother, more enjoyable journey. You can avoid getting lost, reduce stress, and ensure that the journey is safe and direct.

You can check the traffic to avoid road works, construction, and other delays, which will keep you from being trapped on the road unnecessarily.

Plus, planning your Balik Kampung route can help to keep the children entertained, as you can make stops along the way to visit attractions, take breaks, or just stretch their legs.

This gives them something to look forward to and keeps them engaged throughout the journey.

Take Frequent Breaks

Taking frequent breaks can prevent you and the kids from becoming overwhelmed or worn out during the travel. It can also keep everyone safe and comfortable throughout the trip.

During the breaks, you can check if your kids are getting enough rest, need to go to the restroom, or need a snack or a drink. At the same time, you may ensure your children’s safety by ensuring they are securely strapped in their seats.

Breaks also allow you to stretch your legs, get some fresh air, and enjoy the scenery. This is especially helpful when travelling with young children who may become bored after being in the car for too long.

Pack Entertainment for Some Balik Kampung Fun

When road travelling with kids, packing some entertainment is incredibly important. It can make the difference between a peaceful journey and a stressful one.

Kids can get bored very quickly and providing them with entertainment can help distract them, minimise tantrums and keep them occupied.

Whether it’s a tablet with some games or DVDs, a few books, or a selection of their favourite toys, having something to keep them busy can be a lifesaver. Having something to keep children entertained on long road trips can also help avoid the dreaded “are we there yet?” question.

Another benefit of bringing entertainment for kids on road trips is that it could help them learn. Educational books, games, and activities can help stimulate young minds and keep them focused.

Bring Plenty of Snacks and Drinks

Keeping kids entertained and well-fed during long car rides is key to a smooth and successful trip.

Kids may become restless and fussy if they don’t have anything to snack on during the ride, and since car rides can often last for hours, it’s important to make sure kids are well-fed and hydrated.

Packing healthy snacks such as fruits, nuts, and cereal bars can provide a nutritious and energy-boosting snack.

Drinks such as water and juice are also essential to keep kids hydrated and keep them from getting too cranky.

By packing a variety of snacks and drinks, you can keep kids energetic, hydrated, and entertained during the Balik Kampung journey.

Avoid Distractions While Driving

Distractions while driving can be extremely dangerous, particularly when travelling with children. It is critical to avoid all distractions while driving to ensure the safety of both the driver and any passengers.

You must inform your children as they may not be aware of the risks associated with distracted driving and may be more prone to create a distraction.

Additionally, kids may be easily influenced by the things that they see around them. If the driver is distracted, then the children may be more likely to become distracted as well.

So, set a good example for children when on the road. By avoiding distractions and focusing on driving, you can demonstrate the importance of safe driving and set a good example for your kids in the car.

Don’t Let Kids Play with Objects Inside the Car

Kids playing with objects inside a moving vehicle can be very dangerous.

Even if you or the driver are not distracted, children playing with objects might cause a distraction and endanger everyone in the car.

In addition, objects that are not secured can become projectiles in the event of an accident. This can increase the risk of injury for all occupants in the car and can even cause damage to the car itself.

Moreover, playing with objects inside the car can be a source of constant noise, which can be both a distraction for the driver and an annoyance to other passengers.

The best way to avoid any of these risks is to make it a rule for kids to not play with objects inside the car when travelling. Thus, everyone is safe and the journey is much more pleasant.

Prepare an Emergency Balik Kampung Kit

When travelling with kids, having an emergency kit is essential. It can not only keep kids secure, but it can also save time in the event of a minor emergency.

An emergency kit should include items like bandages, antiseptic wipes, gauze, pain relievers, and any other items that may be needed to treat minor injuries.

The National Safety Council in America also recommends including things such as a flashlight, a whistle, extra clothing and blankets, snacks, bottled water, and a list of emergency contacts.

Keeping the necessary items on hand can help you to be prepared and to respond quickly to any emergency situation.
