So, who hasn’t heard of the famous TikTok family father called Daddy Lucas? If you’re not one of his 865,400 followers, then today is your lucky day—because you’re going to get to know him and his very funny family right here and now.
But as soon as you visit, you will see that apart from imparting family values in a hilarious way, everyone in TikTok Daddy Lucas @daddylucas_oe speaks in Bahasa Malaysia! It might be a bit of a surprise when you first log on to his page but after three seconds, the talking becomes the most natural thing in the world. It’s probably for wider appeal as well since using the national language automatically cuts across communication barriers in multi-racial Malaysia, helping everyone understand and relate with the content easily.
Daddy Lucas is also on Facebook and You Tube but it’s on TikTok that he is in his element.
But enough about talking about him on social media, let’s let Daddy Lucas talk to all of you himself.
So here he is—along with his kids who also are part of this interview.
1. Please introduce yourself and your family. How long have you been creating TikTok content and why do you do it in Malay?
Daddy Lucas: Hi! My name is Daddy Lucas and I am a TikTok family content creator. My wife (MakCik E / Harimau) and I have been married for nine years and I have three beautiful daughters (Queenie, Yuki and Queena).
We started our TikTok accounts in 2019 because it looked like a lot of fun to have with the family. We decided to do our videos in Malay to help our children practice and learn Bahasa Malaysia in a funny, creative way!
2. You have a lot of fans! 865.4K followers and counting! How did you achieve that and how do you feel about having so many followers?
Daddy Lucas: Hahahahaha! Yeah, not bad right? We’re not really sure how we got so many, but I guess people like to watch our videos and enjoy our family’s antics. It’s a lot of fun reading the comments and thinking about how to make our fans laugh more with our replies. It’s especially great when they make fun of Harimau and the kids! Haha! But most importantly, I hope I can use my videos to influence more fans to look at the humour in life and the right moral values.
3. To Mummy MakCik E/Harimau, how do you enjoy being a TikTok mum?
MakCik E / Harimau: I like it a lot! My personal belief is that ‘kehidupan memerlukan keseronokan’ (life needs fun), and doing these videos gives me the chance to spend time and have fun with my husband and daughters.
Seeing my daughters having fun also makes me very happy. Sometimes, it can be hard to balance things because life gets busy. But we always find time to be together as a family and have fun like this!
4. Your beautiful child actors really know how to be natural on screen! Please tell us more about them? What are their ages, their likes and dislikes, favourite food, favourite activities?
Daddy Lucas: I have three precious daughters. Queenie is 9 years old. She likes playing iPad games and loves IT knowledge…but what she doesn’t like is vegetables!
Yuki is 8 years old. What she likes is drawing and Barbie dolls. She likes to decorate her dream house with her toys and Barbie. What she dislikes I think is when her sister Queena snatches her Barbie always, and Yuki’s most favourite food is seafood, especially clams cooked with garlic! She can eat more than her daddy!!
Queena is 5 years old. What she likes is make up! She is always using Harimau’s make up to draw her eye brow, then she will put on mascara and lipstick.
And Queena’s favourite food is macaroni and spaghetti. But she only loves it best when her mum Harimau cooks spaghetti.
All three kids have one request when travelling abroad is allowed again, and that is to go to Japan and visit Disneyland where they can dress up as princesses.
5. We love the picture with the Sesame Street characters in the Opening Image. Where and when was this and where is your other daughter?
Daddy Lucas: Yeah, I like the picture very much, too.
We took the picture at the Universal Studios Singapore Sesame Street, Resorts World, Sentosa. The picture only shows Queenie and Yuki. When we were taking this picture, Queena was only 2 years old. The weather in Singapore is very hot and not suitable to bring her, so only two elder sisters were allowed by grandma to visit and play at Universal Studios Singapore.
6. Coming back to @daddylucas_oe, what is the objective of your content?
Daddy Lucas: We wanted our TikTok videos to bring joy and spread happiness to our fans. All of our content is about the morals and values we practice in our family, and the funny moments we share together. Most importantly, we wanted to show other parents that making TikTok videos is a great way to record their best and funniest moments with their children while bonding as a family.
7. With all the humour going on, who is the one who thinks up the script? How much time does it take to plan and shoot a video?
Daddy Lucas: I write our TikTok scripts mainly. I think about the funny things my wife and children have done, and that inspires the videos we make. I also get inspiration from my FYP (ForYouPage) to see what’s trending with other creators like us. After writing the script, the family will sit down and discuss how to make the video. Our kids are very involved in how they want to act in the video, and we discuss how they’re going to play their parts. We make sure they’re involved from the planning stage so they enjoy taking the video and learning Bahasa Malaysia at the same time!
Each video normally takes us about two to three hours to shoot and edit. The TikTok app makes it very easy for us to share our stories, especially with the easy to use shooting and video editing tools we can play with. We also have lots of fun with the different filters and sounds, and the whole family enjoys experimenting with the videos we make.
8. Hey Queenie, Yuki and Queena, do you enjoy being a part of your daddy’s videos? Why?
The Kids: We enjoy filming TikTok videos with daddy and mummy, because when we go shopping, many followers and fans want to take photos with us!!
9. How is school going? How are your classes going?
The Kids: We’re very happy that we can be back at school and meet our friends!
10. Daddy Lucas, what are your children’s favourite subject in school?
Daddy Lucas: Queenie and Yuki love Malay Class and English Class. They want to get better at these languages so they can talk to all their friends!
11. What do the kids want to be when they grow up?
Daddy Lucas: Queenie wants to be a TikTok creator and a YouTuber in future because she wants to follow her daddy.
She also wants to be an influencer who shares good moral values to the community. Meanwhile, Yuki wants to be a chef! She enjoys decorating food and making it beautiful to share with others.
12. You guys are having so much fun as one connected family! So for other parents out there who might also like to be TikTok family creators, could you share some tips? Are there certain techniques they should know in terms of learning up the app or even in presentation skills?
Daddy Lucas: Honestly, the TikTok app is very intuitive. The more you use it, the more you’ll learn and the more fun video making will become. If you do have questions, TikTok has a great user guide in the app itself that makes things easy to pick up, from user tools to safety tools.
We’re also very happy that TikTok has a lot of tools to help manage digital wellbeing on the app. We’re content creators, but we’re parents first, y’know? In everything we do we need to put our girls’ safety first. It’s comforting to know TikTok has options for parents to monitor their children’s usage of the app, too. Everything from screen-time management to video monitoring, it’s very comforting to know that we get to enjoy our TikTok journey together as a family.
