Sometimes certain things happen that might just make you explode.
It’s hard to control anger sometimes, especially during stressful times.
Screaming at your kids should never be okay as this makes them tiptoe around you, being cautious and distrustful of you.
But we are all human and sometimes it may occur.
It doesn’t mean it’s justified but in the event that it happens, one mum has a solution for it that may help.
This mother and parenting coach, Mandy Grass shared on TikTok her five-minute rule.
The rule is that within those five minutes, a calm conversation will take place.
Mandy mentioned that usually this conversation would happen to confess a certain wrongdoing.
Both parties must remain calm during the conversation, no matter what it is you or your child confessed to.
Mandy also mentioned that logical consequences are still made after the confession.
For example, she said, “I snuck my phone; I might lose my phone. I snuck out; I might lose going out that weekend.”
This creates an understanding between you, as the parent, and your child.
What Parents are Saying About This Rule
This video has been viewed almost 150K times and has over 15K likes.

Almost all of them are supportive of this idea.
One of the users commented, “It promotes communication and trust whilst also allows space for reasonable consequences and reflection!”
Another user commented, “I do this and I call it a pass. I feel like it helps them so much to be honest with me!”
There are also some users sharing their own version of the rule, like the ‘Calm Card’ and ‘Truth Candle’.
Yelling Should Never Be the Solution
No matter how frustrated you are, you should avoid yelling at your kids as much as possible.
Healthline shared a few reasons why it should never be a solution; some of them include:
- Makes the behaviour worse
- Changes their brain development
- Leads to depression
- Affects physical health
- Causes chronic pain
