How to Treat and Prevent Nappy Rash

diaper-cream

Nappy rash or diaper rash is one of the most common causes of skin irritation in children.

It often appears as red, itchy spots on the baby’s private parts.

If your baby is always cranky, crying or having sleepless nights that keep you awake as well, then be sure to look at their diaper area.

They may just be experiencing nappy rash.

It can be hard to see our child in such discomfort. And nappy rash can make even the happiest baby upset.

While our first instincts as parents may be to rush them to the hospital, nappy rashes are seldom serious and can be treated at home.

As long as you know how to recognise the signs and administer the correct at-home treatment.

So today, consultant paediatrician Dr Chin Wai Seong is here to teach us the very basics on nappy rash: what causes it and what parents can do to help.

Read on to find out more.

Should I be worried about nappy rashes?

Yes, you should be worried if your baby has a nappy rash. Nappy rash is actually very common among infants.

I would say almost every baby have and will experience it in their infancy.

It is also a condition that many parents often tend to overlook.

They may see their baby crying and don’t know the cause. Chances are its nappy rash.

Open their diaper, look at their bottom and you may just find your answer.

But don’t worry, nappy rash is very treatable and even preventable with the right methods.

What causes nappy rash?

Many things can cause a nappy rash. But the main culprit is usually the diaper itself.

When your baby’s skin is exposed to prolonged contact with the faecal matter or stool in the diaper, it can irritate the surrounding area.

This causes inflammation and itchiness, leading to uncomfortable rashes.

The friction between the diaper and the baby’s bottom also contributes to the problem and fungal infections may worsen it.

How do we prevent nappy rash?

As I have mentioned previously, the main culprit of nappy or diaper rash is prolonged contact to faecal matter or stool.

So, the best course of action for parents when they figure out that nappy rash is the source of the problem is to do frequent nappy changes.

This reduces the chances of infection and irritation.

Moreover, be sure to use an appropriately-sized nappy.

A diaper that is too small and too tight may cause chaffing against the baby’s skin and make nappy rash worse.

Next advice I have is to use a disposable diaper. To prevent nappy rash, I suggest parents use a barrier cream that contains zinc oxide.

You can find these creams by looking for words like ‘Nappy Rash Cream’.

Apply a generous amount to your baby’s bottom before putting on their diaper.
