One of the most anticipated Disney live-action remakes of the year, The Little Mermaid definitely had us singing Part of Your World on repeat.

The film took us through a tsunami of emotions: wonder, suspense, melancholy and beneath it all, an ocean of nostalgia.

But The Little Mermaid isn’t just another copy paste of the 1989 original.

The evergreen lessons of our childhood are brought back in more profound and powerful ways here.

The Little Mermaid is a treasure trove of moral values, and these are just some of them.

SPOILER WARNING: If you haven’t seen The Little Mermaid (2023) and do not wish to be spoiled, turn back for now.

Chase Your Dreams

You may think this is about Ariel but it’s not.

Instead, it’s Eric who they may emulate.

His dedication to advancing his kingdom by learning from other cultures is both noble and inspirational.

On the other hand, this can also serve as a lesson for us parents—to never suppress our child’s curiosity.

In the desperate attempt to squash his daughter’s dangerous fantasies, Triton only managed to drive a wedge in their relationship.

So never give your kids a reason to lose faith in you.

If they do, they may easily stumble down dark and forbidden paths to get what they want.

Always allow your kids the freedom to dream.

Actions and Consequences

While we’re here daydreaming about being mermaids, Ariel pines all day for the human world.

Until the wicked sea witch grants her wish with deadly consequences.

Your child will understand that there is always a cost to their desires. Albeit, probably not nearly as dramatic Ariel’s.

The greater the desire, the steeper the price.

So, let your kids know that one should never make rash decisions in the moment.

Especially if their goals or dreams are just within reach.

Stranger Danger

There are so many cruel and evil people in the world, and the innocence of youth rarely understands this.

But The Little Mermaid teaches us this early on in the film.

Ariel was too quick to trust Ursula who claims to be her aunt, and she paid for it dearly.

Your kids can learn to not easily fall for a kind face.

Because sometimes, the most beautiful flowers can also be the most carnivorous.

Always teach them to be on guard when alone.

The Power of Friendship

There are no greater friends than Sebastian, Scuttle and Flounder.

Despite their relative smallness and aversion to danger, they still managed to come through for Ariel.

They brave the perils of the mortal world in the name of friendship, using their wits and guile to make sure she gets true love’s kiss.

Being there for your friends in their time of need is definitely something you want your kids to learn.
