Society has always been the one who puts value on most things in life. Art stream is one of them.

Believe it or now, in Malaysia, it has always been a battle of choosing which one is the better stream – art stream or science stream.

But, the truth is both streams are beneficial and good as long as the children are interested in the subjects!

Stereotypes About Art Stream’s Students

The common stereotype that society says about being an art stream student is that you will not succeed in life.

Besides that, art students are called uneducated, lazy, and it is not easy for them to get any job in the future.

I am an art stream student now and was in high school too. There are many comments that were thrown to me and my friends for being in the art stream class.

Commonly, art stream students will be placed down at the bottom of the list. Why is that? Society has made people believe that being an art student will have no good future.

Most parents would ask their children to dive into the science stream when they get their PT3 or PMR results. Some of my friends were forced to study science stream although they are not passionate about it and this saddens me.

Children should be able to make their own decision on what they want to study. Both of the streams definitely would be able to provide them with a better future as long as they are passionate and study hard for it.

  • Explores language

Commonly, people would associate art stream with only doing arts or drawing. However, the art stream covers languages too!

Fun fact, students in Malaysia that study art stream have subjects like English Literature, Malay Literature and others. These subjects will allow them to pursue a degree or diploma in literature, journalism, translation, communication, psychology and many more!

  • Opportunity in learning law

Did you know that if your children are in the art stream, they can pursue law? Yes! They are able to join a local university for Foundation in Law.

They also need to achieve A-grade in English Language and a credit grade in Mathematics/Additional Mathematics for SPM.

One of the focus of art streams is language. Thus, it would definitely sharpen your children’s skills if they are interested in studying law!

  • Amplify creativity

Art streams do provide art subjects and this help students to enhance their creativity in drawing! A friend of mine who took an art class for SPM now has her own studio and company. Isn’t that amazing?

Students are able to express their talents in drawing, building structure, projects and many more! This will help them to choose their own path to continue their study in the university in courses like graphic, multimedia, fashion, fine arts, illustration and wholesome of choices.

  • Learning about the economy!

Art stream students study economics? Yes! I took an Entrepreneurship course in high school and learnt about the economy and business.

If your children are interested in having a business or have political interests, art stream is definitely suitable for them. They are able to have a general knowledge regarding the subjects before they want to pursue a degree or diploma.

In Malaysia, there are many courses in university that they can choose such as business economics, politics, accounting and others.

So, I hope you would have a better idea of art stream. It’s okay if you still want your children to pursue science stream but make sure that they do it on their own will.

My advice for parents, I would suggest for you to support and motivate your children on what they want to pursue in life.

We can only guide and advise them but let them have their own identity and life path. Your children would be happier to do the things that they love!
