To prepare the younger generation, the government is looking into introducing a Technology subject as part of the education syllabus.

The subject is to ensure that young students will be sufficiently armed with the necessary knowledge and advanced technology in the digital industry.

The proposal of adding Technology as a subject has been discussed with the Education Ministry, said Minister of Communications and Multimedia Gobind Singh Deo, according to The New Straits Times.

A new learning system is needed to match new technological challenges, especially since the Industrial Revolution 4.0 is propelling educational transformation, said Gobind at the launch of the JomStudi programme at an Internet centre in Kampung Kering Labu, Negeri Sembilan.

However, there are various preparations that need to first be made before the idea can be executed. This includes providing easy Internet access nationwide, especially in the rural areas.

He said that it was a challenge, but one that the country must overcome as the world is now moving towards the industrial and digital era. The ministry is also working hard to provide internet access, infrastructure, and facilities which can benefit people from all walks of life, he said.

A Digital Learning Hub

JomStudi is a new digital learning hub that aggregates school syllabus-based content to make digital learning more accessible, especially to those in under-served areas.

The programme is a collaboration between Media Prima Bhd, Astra Malaysia Holdings Bhd and Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, and is supported by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC).

The concept behind JomStudi is as a response to changes in the educational landscape where the internet now functions as the main tool to obtain information. Through JomStudi, students can get easy access to quality learning materials at any time and place. The education content is also based the syllabus set by the Education Ministry.

JomStudi is based around self-learning, with features that can enrich the student’s learning experience such as a badge reward system and a personal profile that keeps track of learning progress.

This collaboration is vital to bridge the digital gap and change the way learning is experienced, said Gobind. He added that it is important for the younger generation to start building digital skills to ensure that they had an appetite for life-long learning to thrive in the future.
