When it comes to navigating public transport systems, whether you’re a seasoned traveller or a newbie in a new city, having some tricks up your sleeve can make your journey much smoother.

But sometimes for whatever reason, you may want your child to start using public transport as well. Especially if they’re old enough to do so when going to school for instance.

From saving time to cutting costs, here are some essential tips to help you or your kids master public transport like a pro.

But first let’s learn a few things first about the Malaysian public transport system.

The Malaysian Public Transport, Explained

RapidKL, owned by Prasarana Malaysia is the country’s largest public transportation system.

Aside from the well-known Rapid Buses, RapidKL also consists of LRT, MRT, and BRT.

These are three different modes of transportation that are commonly used to provide efficient and convenient travel options to commuters.

LRT (Light Rail Transit)

LRT refers to an urban rail transit system that operates on dedicated tracks, either at ground level or elevated.

LRT lines typically connect various parts of a city, serving both residential and commercial areas. LRT trains are electrically powered and run at regular intervals throughout the day.

Passengers can access LRT stations via ticketing systems and platforms, and the trains usually have multiple stops along their routes. In Malaysia, cities like Kuala Lumpur and Penang have LRT networks.

MRT (Mass Rapid Transit)

MRT stands for Mass Rapid Transit. It is a high-capacity rail-based transportation system designed to move a large number of passengers quickly.

MRT systems are usually built underground or elevated, separate from road traffic.

These systems consist of multiple stations along their routes, and trains operate at frequent intervals. MRT networks aim to provide faster, more efficient, and comfortable transportation options for commuters.

Malaysia’s most notable MRT system is the Klang Valley MRT, serving the Greater Kuala Lumpur area.

BRT (Bus Rapid Transit)

BRT stands for Bus Rapid Transit. It is a bus-based mass transit system that combines the efficiency and reliability of rail transit with the flexibility and lower cost of buses.

BRT systems typically have dedicated bus lanes, priority at intersections, and off-board fare collection systems. This ensures faster and more efficient bus operations compared to regular bus services.

BRT stations are designed with platforms at the same level as the bus doors, allowing for quick boarding and alighting. In Malaysia, the Sunway BRT in Kuala Lumpur is an example of a BRT system.

Tips on Using Public Transport

Reload Your Metro-Card

Before you even think about taking a ride on an LRT, remember to have your metro-card fully topped up. You can get metro-cards or Touch n’ Go cards at most convenience stores and even at Watson.

You can top-up your metro-card at any RapidKL counter, 7-11 and most convenience stores like 99 Mart, Family Mart, K Mart, Speed Mart and many others.

For a daily pass, each station has a machine where you can purchase one-time travel tokens for a one-way trip. This is usually for emergencies if you don’t have your IC or a metro card.

If you commute often and want to save money, sign up for the MY50 program which is only available to Malaysian citizens. Simply present your IC to any of the RapidKL counters.

By paying only RM50 you can get unlimited access to their public transport services for a whole month. This privilege extends to RapidKL buses as well.

Speaking of buses, if you’re using any of the Smart Selangor buses (which is a free shuttle service) you also need to download their app. Anyone who wants to use this service needs to scan the QR code displayed on the bus.

Their services are still free for Malaysian citizens but if you are a foreigner be sure to top-up your balance because you will be charge for each ride.

Use the Moovit app

Gone are the days of waiting for hours on end for the bus or train to arrive. With apps like Moovit, you will be able to time your departure down to the minute.

With the Moovit app you are able to plan your route in advance. Simply type your current location and destination and the app will list down the most efficient routes as well as which buses to take.

This also includes everything from the bust or train station, the expected time of arrival, and even the duration of the trip.

Google Maps offers more or less the same features.

But Moovit takes this process a step further. It actually tells you the exact time the buses arrive at your chosen station in real time. Simply “favourite” your desired stations so you can check the arrival times easily.

It helps to do this while you’re at the station so the app can pinpoint your exact location so that you have the correct station.

Time it Right

Unfortunately just like if you were to drive a car, LRT, MRT and BRT stations also experience “traffic jams”.

Peak hours on public transport can be crowded and hectic. If possible, try to avoid traveling during rush hours to enjoy a more comfortable journey.

Alternatively, if you’re flexible with your schedule, opt for off-peak hours when the transport is less crowded, and you can have a seat to yourself.

However this may not be a viable option for some especially if you’re commuting for work.

Stay Alert and Follow the Rules

While public transport is generally safe, it’s important to remain vigilant. Keep an eye on your belongings at all times, especially in crowded areas.

Avoid displaying valuable items or large amounts of cash, as this may attract unwanted attention. If possible, sit near the driver or in well-lit areas during nighttime journeys.

That said, obey the rules of Malaysian public transport. This includes wearing a mask at all times and reserving the red seats for the elderly, the pregnant and the disabled.

Stay Informed

Stay updated with any service changes or disruptions that may affect your journey. Check for service alerts or follow official transport accounts on social media for real-time updates.

Being aware of any delays or diversions will help you plan your journey more effectively and avoid unnecessary frustrations.

RapidKL, the country’s foremost train service, has a Twitter account where they post regular updates on specific stations. This include arrival delays, emergency shut-downs, technical issues and safety hazards.

Have a Safe Journey

By following these tips and hacks, you’ll be well-equipped to navigate public transport systems with ease.

From planning your routes to staying informed and embracing local customs, mastering public transport will not only save you time and money but also provide a unique and authentic travel experience.

So hop on board, and enjoy the ride, mums!
