School-going children in Malaysia can now rejoice as the Ministry of Education has decided to loosen its stance on mandatory school uniform for all students.

According to the Malay Mail, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek announced today that new guidelines for national schools will now require students to wear school uniform only twice a week.

This decision, reached after consultations with parent-teacher groups and various stakeholders, aims to accommodate the feedback gathered from engagement sessions with parents, industry players, teachers, and communities.

During a school week, students will now wear school uniform for two days, sports attire for two days, and co-curricular attire for one day.

The decision to allow students and teachers to wear sports attire began on May 3 of the previous year due to hot weather concerns and potential health complications.

This practice will continue for the upcoming 2024/2025 school session, starting in March.

In her new year’s message, Minister Fadhlina reaffirmed the decision, citing the positive outcomes of engagement sessions with relevant stakeholders, including teachers and parents.

A circular containing additional details will be issued soon to provide comprehensive information on the matter.

Fadhlina highlighted that the move is intended to alleviate the burden on parents and enable them to prepare for the new school session in advance.

Moreover, schools will have the flexibility to determine specific days for different types of attire, offering students more comfortable options moving forward.

With the rise in unpredictable weather conditions particularly rising temperatures, it’s important to be mindful of our daily clothes and avoid restrictive attire.

Unfortunately, school uniforms do not fit the bill.

With school going children being most exposed to the outside environment of harsh heat, this change in attire guidelines could not come at a more appropriate time.

Hopefully, in the future the Ministry of Education will continue to adjust other school guidelines for the betterment of all Malaysian students.

This can reducing time spent outdoors and investing in better air circulation technology in classrooms.

This will ensure the comfort, safety and wellbeing of all parties and make learning and studying that more conducive for our children.
