Shaken Baby Syndrome Can Lead to Permanent Brain Damage

Shaken baby syndrome is a form of severe brain injury that happened when you shake a baby vigorously and forcefully. It is also known as abusive head trauma, shaken impact syndrome, and whiplash shake syndrome. The shaken baby syndrome is a form of child abuse to babies that can lead to severe brain damage. It doesn’t need a long time, just 5 seconds of shaking a baby, it can result in this.

How does this happen?

Shaken baby syndrome happens when a baby is shaken forcefully for 5 seconds or more, results in the bouncing of brain back and forth again the skull. When the baby is shaken, it can cause the brain to bruise (cerebral contusion), swelling of the brain, and brain bleeding. This is the primary cause of the permanent brain damage or death.

Shaking an infant or small child may cause other injuries, such as damage to the neck, spine, and eyes.

In many notorious cases that happened in Malaysia, and of course other countries as well, usually when the caregiver cannot get the baby to stop crying, they will shake the baby due to frustration or anger.

Shaken Baby Syndrome Prevention

Parents, especially new one have to go to parenting classes to help them have a better understanding about the dangers of violent shaking, and they will learn on how to provide tips to soothe a crying baby and how to manage their stress that causes from crying babies.

When you cannot calm your crying baby, you may be tempted to try anything to get the tears to stop — but it’s important always to treat your child with care. Nothing justifies shaking a child.

According to Mayo Clinic, If you’re having trouble managing your emotions or the stress of parenthood, seek help. Your child’s doctor may offer a referral to a counsellor or other mental health provider. If other people help take care of your child — whether a hired caregiver, sibling or grandparent — make sure they know the dangers of the shaken baby syndrome.

All in all, everybody should know that we should never shake a baby under any circumstances. This is a life-threatening condition that requires immediate medical treatment. The shaken baby syndrome is preventable.
