These days, urban homes in Malaysia may not have the generous amount of land or space that older homes may have. However, you can still grow a garden in whatever small strip you have. We’ve compiled some small garden ideas that are simple yet practical.

Furthermore, these ideas are suitable for the Malaysian weather and are easy to maintain. You don’t have to have green thumbs to put them into practice:

Hanging Planters

When you don’t have much space, hanging planter boxes are godsent. This is one of those small garden ideas that will allow you to continue having a large variety of plants. The only difference is that they’ll be up on a wall rather than on the ground or in pots.

These days, hanging planters come in various designs, and you can get one with multiple tiers to plant even more things. Usually, herbaceous plants do very well in planters like these.

Vertical Wall Planters

If you don’t have much space at home horizontally, then this vertical wall planter is a great idea. It provides a place for plants that need deeper root depth to grow.

The extra depth will also come in handy for planting kitchen herbs and vegetables like chilies, curry leaves, coriander and more. It also provides a wonderful place for creeper plants to grow.

Succulents Corner

One of the best plants to keep if you’re planning on a small garden, is succulents. Unlike cacti, succulents don’t have sharp thorns, which makes them safe if you have children and/or pets.

Although they look rather easy to care for, you still do need to be careful and learn the proper process for succulent care. Succulents are a good and practical choice for small gardens because they don’t grow very large.

Wooden Plant Boxes

One solution to lack of space is sectioned wooden planters. These planters, made of natural wood, are sectioned into multiple smaller spaces so that you can grow more types of plants.

These sectioned wooden boxes are great if you’re planning on planting small kitchen herbs and condiments. Imagine having some spring onions growing next to some peppermint, kaffir lime leaves and bird’s eye chili.

Recycled Items as Planters

When it comes to planting in wall planters, you don’t have to stick with boxes. In fact, you can recycle almost any type of container that can hold some soil. We came across this awesome idea of turning old and bald tyres into a place to plant flowers.

You can also use old coconut husks, plastic bottles, milk cartons and even old computer cases. Recycled items also mean you can save money and not need to spend on specialized planters for your space.

Small Gardens Deserve Love and Care

Many people think that small gardens might be easier to care for. Despite not being large and spacious, small gardens have a lot of potential. If you spend time on them, they offer plenty of opportunities to be creative and to express yourself. So, don’t waste any space you have at home and start working on your small garden today!
