Sunway Malls Champions Sustainability Movement

Sunway Malls Sirim Certification

Sunway Malls is reinforcing its commitment to sustainability and responsible business practices in conjunction with United Nations Day, by supporting eco-conscious lifestyle habits (recycling, reusing, reimagining) and raising awareness on the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Themed ‘From This to That’, the mall is organising eco-friendly workshops at Sunway Velocity Mall, Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Big Box, and Sunway Kluang Mall from 22 October to 9 November 2025.

Coinciding with the launch, the mall group announces its latest investment in Food Digester machines and international SIRIM accolades.

HC Chan, Chief Executive Officer of Sunway Malls, said: “ESG is an important and integral part of today’s business.

Our commitment to ESG is a covenant of trust with our employees, customers, and communities.

It is how we ensure growth is inclusive, ethical, and sustainable for every stakeholder. Hence, we are steadfast in pursuing sustainability initiatives in Sunway Malls”

New Food Digester

With food waste identified as a major source in waste management, Sunway Malls launched its first food composter in 2019 and from there the journey of food waste diversion began.

Providing on-site facilities encourages tenants to play their part in waste management and ensures that sustainability is a collective movement.

Now, Sunway Malls has invested in food digesters, a machine that transforms food scraps into greywater.

Unlike the food composter that turns food scraps into soil, the food digester turns scraps into environmentally friendly discharge.

Plans are in place to partner with specialists to upcycle the greywater into liquid fertiliser.

The first food digester In Malaysia is currently operational at Sunway Velocity and is scheduled to be extended to Sunway Pyramid by the end of 2025, and more malls in the future.

SIRIM Certification for Sunway Malls’ Sustainability Initiatives

Sunway Malls champions pioneering sustainability initiatives, laying a strong foundation and building steady momentum towards greater awareness and action across all its malls.

The mall group’s latest certifications include ISO 14001 (Environmental Management), ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety Management), ISO 9001 (Quality Management), and SIRIM 55 (Environmental, Social, and Governance Management).

Sunway Pyramid is the first mall and 16th company in Malaysia to receive the prestigious SIRIM 55 certification, this milestone sets a benchmark for sustainability in retail.

SIRIM QAS International division provides testing and certification services globally.

This underscores the mall group’s commitment to international standards across its operations.

Sustainable Practices and Community Partnerships

Apart from introducing the first food digester in Malaysia, Sunway Malls was also first in the nation to launch Smart Toilet Systems to improve water efficiency and Smart Parking to reduce carbon emissions and eliminate the printing of parking tickets, which divert 0.5 tonnes of paper waste from the landfill annually.

Infrastructure upgrades such as EV bikes, motion-activated escalators, rainwater harvesting, and rooftop solar panels continue to conserve natural resources and build independence through innovation.

The mall group also partners with Kloth Cares to provide shoppers with an accessible platform to responsibly reduce fabric waste via textile recycling bins.

Sunway Malls also has partnerships with buy-back centres and recycling vendors to encourage a culture of reuse and recycling among tenants and shoppers.

Sunway Malls’ community-driven initiatives integrate sustainability in everyday life.

Sunway Putra’s Book Donation Bin and Reading Corner promotes literacy and extends the lifecycle of pre-loved books.

Sunway Velocity’s V-Library and Share Your Bags station encourages shoppers to exchange books and reusable bags.

The annual Earth Hour events at Sunway Velocity transforms concourses into eco-hubs with engaging booths and activities that create climate awareness.

On a more creative front, Sunway Pyramid, Sunway Velocity, Sunway Carnival, Sunway Putra, and Sunway Giza feature upcycled art murals made from discarded materials – showing the community how to extend the lifespan of waste into beautiful art, sparking conversations about responsible consumption.

From This to That Campaign (22 October to 9 November)

Sunway Malls is working with eco-partners such as Kloth Cares and Fipper, and eco-friendly tenants like Uniqlo, The Body Shop, and Timberland in an effort to amplify the sustainable impact through recycling drives, upcycling initiatives, and greener retail choices.

This showcases how collaboration between malls, partners, and tenants can make sustainable living more accessible and inspiring for everyone.

Those at Sunway Velocity Mall can also look forward to an eco-friendly weekend bazaar for zero-waste shopping and get ready to be wowed by a range of eco-friendly performances over the weekend.
