After a two-month competition, the Minecraft Education Challenge 2023 concluded at Sunway Velocity Mall.
The challenge, which was aimed at fostering problems-solving skills, and nurturing critical and creative thinking through coding, was a collaborative effort involving Sunway Malls, Microsoft in Malaysia, and the Ministry of Education Malaysia (Education Resources and Technology Division, Ministry of Education/ Bahagian Sumber dan Teknologi Pendidikan, Kementerian Pendidikan Malaysia, BSTP).
Open to government schools under the Ministry of Education (MoE), MARA institutions, private and international schools in Malaysia, the competition featured 12 categories for primary, secondary and special needs school children.
This year’s theme for the Minecraft Education Challenge, “Sustainable Shopping Mall of the Future”, attracted 3,646 submissions among primary and secondary school students throughout the country.
Sekolah Kebangsaan Putrajaya Presint 8 (1) emerged as the biggest winner in the public-school category earning two awards; Mohammad Rohan Parhizkar secured the lower primary category, while Mohammad Parsa Parhizkar secured the second runner-up position for the upper primary category.
Other winners included students from Sarawak, Johor, Kedah, and others. In total, there were 24 winners from 21 schools this year.
In addition, Muhammad Adam Wafeeq Bin Mohd Zulhafiz from SK Tasik Puteri 2, Selangor received recognition for the best video highlighting their one-of-a-kind work.
Each winner was rewarded with a cash prize, a trophy, and a certificate of participation for their outstanding effort.
The closing ceremony of Minecraft Mall Discovery was graced by Ts. Paridon bin Sahid, Deputy Director, Education Resources and Technology Division, Ministry of Education with an opening speech.
Also present were Mr. Sheikh Manzoor, General Manager, Public Sector Group of Microsoft in Malaysia and Mr. H.C Chan, CEO of Sunway Malls & Theme Parks.
The VIPs were also given a tour around the Minecraft Mall Discovery event space, where Microsoft Global Training Partners (GTP) and Guru Peneraju Generasi Digital/ Microsoft Innovative Educator Experts (MIEE) led the Hour of Code session, offering learners the chance to explore coding concepts and puzzle solving challenges, as well as other activities covering subjects such as science, mathematics, computer science, and arts and design.
All participants were rewarded with an e-certificate upon completion.
Aside from the educational classes and workshops, the event also featured a series of exciting activities such as Minecraft-themed Perler Beads Workshops for the public and Sunway Super App’s Box Art Workshops which were exclusive to Sunway Super App members.
Shoppers also stood to redeem limited-edition Minecraft goodies with a special tier exclusively for UOB cardholders for retail spending.
The event at Sunway Velocity Mall ended on 29 October 2023.
