Sunway Velocity Mall Brings ‘Joy To The World’ with its ‘This is Us’ Christmas CSR Campaign

Tis the Season of Giving and Sunway Velocity Mall takes it a step further by bringing Joy to the World of Down Syndrome.

“We don’t change them for the world, but we would change the world for them.”

Christmas ─ the season of joy and goodwill to mankind ─ saw Sunway Velocity Mall sharing the spirit of giving by organizing its “This Is Us” CSR campaign in hopes of raising awareness and understanding for Down Syndrome.

Christmas Cheer for Down Syndrome Children and their Families

On the 23rd of November 2019, Sunway Velocity Mall welcomed children and their families from Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation and Persatuan Sindrom Down Malaysia with open arms to enjoy a fun-filled day at the mall.

Children from Kiwanis Down Syndrome Foundation and Persatuan Sindrom Down Malaysia got to draw, colour and create craftwork with their fingers, thanks to Sunway Velocity Mall’s ‘This is Us’ campaign.

The eventful day started with an engaging workshop where the children got to create art and craft with their fingers. Because finger mobility can be challenging for children with Down Syndrome, Sunway Velocity Mall organised this workshop to increase their soft tissue dexterity and strength.  After the workshop, families and their kids were treated with a hearty lunch at Aragan Yokocho Restaurant, the largest Japanese restaurant at Sunway Velocity Mall.

After the art and craft session, the children and their families were treated to lunch at Aragan Yokocho Restaurant, the largest Japanese restaurant at Sunway Velocity Mall.

After the satisfying lunch, all the children gathered at the Main Atrium for a special Santa meet and greet session. To their delight, the children found presents under the Christmas tree! Ahmad Zul-Qarnain, Director of Sunway Velocity Mall; KS Wong, Senior General Manager; Phang Sau Lian, General Manager of Sunway Velocity Mall; and Darren, Associate Director of Marketing at Sunway Velocity Mall along with Santa Claus handed out the presents to the kids.

On top of the gifts galore, the children also received a brand new pair of shoes from FUFA and gingerbread cookies from BreadStory. To top off this wonderful celebration, Sunway Velocity Mall donated a total of RM4,000 worth of household goods to both organizations in the hope of encouraging these organizations to aid the kids. Everyone beamed with joy. Smiles were from ear to ear and laughter from the children, family members and shoppers ignited the whole mall.

Santa made a personal appearance and met with all the children, giving them gifts which were decked under the glittering Christmas tree.

“Malls today should be inclusive for all walks of life as malls have increasingly become the focal point of people’s life. For Sunway Velocity Mall, we hope our endeavor will continue to impact people’s lives,” said Phang.

Come and Be a Part of ‘This is Us’ Campaign

The children had a field day choosing their own brand new shoes from FUFA and received gingerbread cookies from BreadStory. To top off the celebration, Sunway Velocity Mall donated a total of RM4,000 worth of household goods to both organizations for aiding the kids.

Shoppers can also get to be a part of this impactful campaign and help Sunway Velocity Mall spread the Yuletide cheer! From 22nd of November until 26th of December, Sunway Velocity Mall, shoppers can write letters and send wishes to the children from the two Down Syndrome organizations through the Santa Post Office at the Main Atrium, Ground Floor of Sunway Velocity Mall. Santa’s helpers from the Mall will hand-deliver these letters to the children to brighten up their Christmas.

Understanding Down Syndrome

Down Syndrome is a chromosomal condition that occurs at random during pregnancy. People with Down’s syndrome often experience stigma and discrimination because of their learning disability and physical appearances.

Sunway Velocity Mall hopes that this campaign can help close the gap and understanding for people with Down Syndrome. Seeing people the way they are instead of the way they are not, is the first step in building a better community.
