Toxic Toys Alert: Shocking Discovery Puts Children at Risk

In a recent and alarming discovery by the Consumers Association of Penang (CAP), plastic toys have been found to contain dangerous chemicals that may endanger our children’s lives.

These chemicals, known as chlorinated paraffins are found in various plastics, including children’s toys.

Some of the toys that were tested to contain the toxic compound includes inflatable horses, shrilling chickens, rubber ducks, dolls and plastic teddy bears.

However, the CAP warns parents to avoid all plastic toys for their children for the next foreseeable future.

The Dangers of Toxic Toys

Aside from being highly dangerous when exposed to, they are also correlated with various risks.

The list includes liver and kidney damage, endocrine system disruption, cancer, developmental issues and reproductive health threats.

Children can be exposed to chemicals in toys through inhalation of toxic dust, skin contact, and ingestion, which can either be through exposure to the mouth or by chewing.

A study by the International Pollutants Elimination Network (IPEN) revealed the presence of both short-chain and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins in plastic toys from 10 countries. Malaysia, unfortunately being one of them.

Despite being listed for elimination under the Stockholm Convention in 2017, the chemical also known officially as SCCPs, have still not been banned by Malaysia.

The CAP calls for a ban on chlorinated paraffins and urges the Malaysian government to ratify the Stockholm Convention.
