Why You Shouldn’t Give Babies Water

If you’re giving babies under six months old water, this is a warning for you to stop.

You might have heard this warning before but might not know why.

Dr Samuel, a general practitioner, shares the story of a five-month-old baby getting seizures from drinking water.

The Dangers of Water to Babies

Initially, the baby seemed fine but the mother thought the baby had problems with the formula milk.

That’s when the mother substituted the formula milk for almond milk.

If you didn’t know, almond milk isn’t exactly milk as it’s made purely out of water and almonds.

The almond milk actually has low protein content and very high-water content.

The baby thankfully made full recovery but why is it very bad for babies to the point that it causes seizures?

According to Healthline, the baby’s body isn’t suited for water until several month after birth.

They have tiny tummies and developing kidneys that put them at risk for nutrient loss and water intoxication.

1. Nutrition Interference

A baby’s tummy can only hold about five to 10 millilitres of milk.

Giving your baby water instead of milk means that they’d be fill with useless substance as babies get their nutrients from breast and formula milk.

Breast milk and formula is where babies get their intake of vitamins, minerals, fat and calories that are vital for growth.

It is advised that you give babies water after they’ve turned six months but should be very limited.

2. Water Intoxication

Water intoxication can happen to anyone, even adults.

However, it’ll be harder for adults to be intoxicated with it as it would take several litres in a short period of time.

You need to remember that a baby’s kidneys are still developing and weak when compared to an adult.

When kidneys are given more water than they can handle, the excess water ends up in the bloodstream.

It would dilute the fluid in the bloodstream and lower the concentration of important electrolytes.

If the fluid is diluted, then it could lead to hyponatremia which means too little salt in the blood.

Ask Your Doctor for Advice

If you’re having concerns about anything regarding your baby, it’s best for you to ask your doctor.

If your baby shows any sign of water intoxication, you should go to the hospital immediately.

The signs could look like:

  • inconsolable crying
  • vomiting
  • lethargy
  • seizures
  • tremors

When Can You Give Babies Water

You should probably wait until after your baby turns six months old to give them water.

It is advised for you to only give water in small amount, just to introduce it to them.

However, their main source of hydration should continue to be breast milk and formula until they are at least one year old.

It’s important to note that you shouldn’t dilute your breast milk and formula.

Don’t worry about your baby feeling dehydrated, they’re getting the best nutrients and hydration from what you give them.
