When your baby develops a stuffed nose, it can really break your heart. You want to do your best to help them clear the mucus out so that they can sleep easily and go back to being their adorable selves. Babies need help clearing their noses, and for this reason you can get a baby nasal aspirator.
There are many baby nasal aspirators on the market today. Some use a simple hand pump system while others may rely on more sophisticated motor pumps.
The most common aspirators are those with a large, round hand pump. These are known as bulb aspirators.
How to Use a Baby Nasal Aspirator
When your baby is having a blocked nose, they may be feeling irritable so the first thing you want to do is to make sure they’ve calmed down. Secondly, you want to place your baby in a lying down position, preferably on their back.
Next, you’ll want to gather all the necessary, including your nasal aspirator, saline drops, wet wipes and soft tissues. Follow the steps below to remove your baby’s mucus:
- First, clean any outer visible mucus from your baby’s nose using either a warm, wet cloth or baby wet wipes.
- If you’re using a bulb syringe, squeeze it to get rid of any air inside.
- Insert the tip of the bulb syringe into your baby’s nose and slowly release your hand from squeezing it to suction any mucus out.
- Clean the bulb syringe by squeezing and releasing it onto a tissue several times. Repeat on the other nostril.
- If you’re using a motor operated or hand pump aspirator, simply insert the tip into your baby’s nostrils and press the button or pump.
- Remember to clean all aspirators with warm water and soap after you’re done.
- If your baby’s mucus is too thick and can’t be aspirated easily, drop in one or two drops of saline with a dropper or syringe. You can make your own saline by adding 1/4 teaspoon of salt into warm, boiled water, or purchase saline from the pharmacy.
