Malaysian Moms & Dads Shared Their Ultimate Tips to Console Their Crying Baby

consoling a crying baby

Being a new parent can be both exciting and overwhelming. One of the challenges that every parent has to face is a crying baby. Crying is the way baby communicates. They cry because of discomfort, hungry, in pain, in need of our utmost attention and many more. Sometimes, even we don’t understand the reason why they are crying, even after we’ve tried many things to soothe them. Perhaps you have come across some tips on how to console a crying baby.

Now let’s see how the other parents console their crying baby from their own experiences.

+1 Comfort him/her based on what he/she likes.

Every baby is unique and each has his/her own preference. My top tip to console a crying baby is trying to comfort him/her base on what the baby likes. Try to take the baby for a walk as something outside like flora and fauna or other people around may attract baby’s attention and indirectly help distract his/her insecure feeling.

For illustration purposes only.

+2 Play it Back!

Your baby is crying? Well, let’s cry together! That’s how one mom shared her tip to console her baby.

My Top Tip to console a crying baby is to PLAY IT BACK. Surprised? Like how that even work? Trust me. When I was a young mom, I learned the hard way in consoling babies. But when I imitate them, they paused. So I started to record them fussing and crying on my phone and let them listen to it. They were fascinated by the sound of a crying baby. That little jolt can give us space to check on what went wrong, as in diaper or hungry or bitten by some insects. I have experimented it actually. The science behind is, babies get so distressed by 101 reasons and wanted to get taken care off. Thus, they literally get stuck crying. But a surprising distraction like a recording of their own voice can jolt babies out of what is making them upset. Babies are so interested in the world around them that simply introducing something new can help break that cycle of crying. Well, sometimes long song works too.

+3 Pet is everyone’s best friend.

Having pets at home can also help to soothe and excite your little one. One mother shared that,

Pet is another good tip to cheer up the crying baby. When my baby boy was crying for no reason, by seeing my pet dog running wildly inside our house while playing with its pet toys, immediately his crying will turn to laugh for the dog’s funny actions.

+4 The “right arms” no one talked about.

Aside from every mother’s magic touch, using the “right arms” can stop the baby from crying.

There is a saying, only the “right arms” that hold the baby will stop the baby from crying. The “right arms” actually mean try holding the baby in the right position with his or her belly over our lower arm and his or her head at our elbow, this may put gentle pressure on the belly & makes the baby feels comfortable to stop the crying.

+5 Superdad(s) to the rescue!

Who says only the mother can console a crying baby? Sometimes the playful dad has a better solution to keep the little one calm.

  • Back to Nature

His brilliant Baba always got a better solution; Baba will carry him outside the house and distract him with nature. Baba will point out some bird, chicken or cat and imitate their sound, bring him near to plants & trees, asked him to touch the leaf, woods and flower while saying out loud the names and colours. Sometimes, Baba will let him walk on top of the grass or the ground barefoot!

Magically, the ‘back to nature’s method’ is the best method to soothe my son at the moment and it works most of the time. My husband said that nature is a beautiful gift from God and it will give pleasure and naturally can calm the human nature. So guys, good luck in trying this ‘back to nature method’!

  • “My dear, I’ll do it! You can go and have a rest,”

I will help my wife when the baby cried constantly or come and offer to watch the baby when my wife needed a rest…
For me, console a crying baby is one of the most challenging for me. When the baby still crying, I will snap my fingers rhythmically and try swaddling or wrapping the baby up, to snuggle and hold the baby against my chest. Let my baby feel more comfortable. Then, singing or play a CD with pleasant gentle sounds.

I will also give the baby a warm bath and gently massage my baby. Put on the lotion and gently massage the baby’s arms, legs, toes and tummy.
