Dim Sum is a Cantonese term that literally translates to ‘Touching the Heart’. It is a traditional style of dining whereby small dishes are served to diners, consisting of steamed, fried or stir-fried dishes.

Dim Sum is usually eaten for breakfast. However, they’re suitable for any time of the day too. These are just some of the good Dim Sum restaurant locations in Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya.

Restoran Tuck Cheong

Tuck Cheong is one of the most established Dim Sum shops you’ll find in the old part of Pudu. It serves breakfast from very early in the morning. You’ll have to be here before the Dim Sim finishes, which can easily happen before 10 a.m.

Their signature dish is actually steamed chicken rice bowl, which consists of tender marinated chicken and Chinese sausages on hot and fluffy rice. The crowds also love the Lor Mai Kai or steamed glutinous rice here.

Yan Yan A One

This nondescript corner shop lot along Jalan Klang Lama used to serve Dim Sum 24 hours a day. However, ever since the Movement Control Order happened due to COVID-19, they’ve limited their service to open from morning until 2 a.m. the next day.

Their Dim Sum is one of the most affordable in town, being priced at only RM3.20 per dish. The restaurant also features a Tai Chow or stir fry menu from which you can order meats, seafood and veggies with rice.

Hoong Foong Dim Sum

Located in USJ 21, Hoong Foong is a clean and spacious modern eatery offering several specialties. These unique dishes can’t be easily found in other Dim Sum places. They include Shang Hai Xiao Long Bao or Shanghai soup dumplings, Yam Lau Sha Bao and fried Glutinous Rice.

Additionally, other in-house specialties include their Fish Maw Pork dumplings, Shark Fin dumplings and Abalone Siu Mai. All of these are considered rather fancy and luxurious, but go for very affordable prices at Hoong Foong.

Phang Kee Dim Sum

Phang Kee is your friendly neighbourhood Dim Sum shop with a twist. Their most enticing menu item is the Gai Who Pau or Glutinous Rice Pao. In short, this is a Lor Mai Gai or steamed glutinous rice with chicken, wrapped in soft pao bread.

Additionally, you can expect the usual steamed and fried Dim Sum here at an affordable price. Also, everything here is prepared fresh daily. Visitors also love the Chee Cheong Fun, which has a silky-smooth texture and a sauce that’s not overpowering.

Dolly is a chain of halal Dim Sum eateries, where you can go if you’re dining with a diverse group of friends. Since it’s Muslim-friendly, chicken, beef and other halal meats are used as ingredients here. Diners love items such as their Salted Egg prawns, Salted Egg Lava Pao and Szechuan Chicken Dumplings.
