The I CAN READ system takes an innovative approach to reading instruction by establishing strong phonemic awareness before teaching children how to link clusters of letters to sounds.
The Reading course helps beginner readers to overcome the difficulties of decoding unfamiliar words by teaching them to blend sounds together with help from I CAN READ’s proprietary coding system. This coding system is invaluable, due to the fact that there is no one:one relationship between sounds and letters in English.
The I CAN READ System is the first in the world to link clusters of letters to single sounds in a unique manner. It was founded by Australian Educational Psychologists Antony Earnshaw and Annabel Seargeant who conducted research between 1995 and 2000 on how children learn to read.
I CAN READ has since become the market leader in English literacy instruction, offering a full range of courses for students aged 2.5 to 12 years old.
Why Is the I CAN READ Methodology Successful?
- Developed by educational psychologists following years of research. The creators are also the authors of Dealing with Dyslexia and Other Reading Difficulties published by Pearson – Prentice Hall.
- Has been hailed by Professor Brian Byrne (author of The Foundation of Literacy)as being in line with current research into optimum ways to teach reading.
- A proven reading system trialled in Singapore MOE primary schools and backed by statistical data.
- Has successfully taught over 270,000 students.
Unique Approach
Research has shown that, in order to become a fluent reader, students must achieve strong phonological and phonemic awareness skills before being exposed to written text. Our curriculum teaches students to identify, pronounce and manipulate the 44 sounds of the English language before they learn to read in a course that focuses one sound at a time. In this way, the structure of our curriculum is cumulative and students are appropriately challenged at each step of their literacy journey.
