Whenever anyone mentions Ipoh, the first thing that comes to mind would usually be kopitiams. These old school coffee shops sell a variety of well-loved heritage dishes, typically inclusive of food that the locals crave and love.

More often than not, you’ll notice a line outside Yong Suan. There’s good reason for this. Apparently, this is where you can find the best Nasi Ganja in town. To clarify, Nasi Ganja doesn’t actually contain any narcotics. Nonetheless, it is a nasi kandar stall that is really addictive.

Once your turn arrives, you can pick from more than 16 curries and side dishes. The highlight here is their Ayam Merah, which as most of us know is fried chicken marinated in spices and coated with a rich red curry. Pair this with half a salted egg and you’re good to go.

Additionally, this stall is Muslim-friendly despite being located in a Chinese coffee shop.

Kedai Kopi Sin Yoong Loong

We can’t have a list without this particular Ipoh restaurant. Sin Yoong Loong coffee shop is known for its smooth and rich white coffee.  The rich taste and aroma of this coffee comes from the unique practice of roasting coffee beans in margarine.

Additionally, you can order their well-known caramel custard, kaya butter toast and soft-boiled eggs. There are also hawker stalls selling more substantial fares. Examples include Wan Tan mee, fried carrot cake, chee cheong fun and curry noodles.

Lou Wong Bean Sprouts Chicken

Serving boiled chicken with bean sprouts is a distinctly Ipoh practice. One Ipoh restaurant where you can find this is at Lou Wong. The entire eatery is dedicated to selling Pak Cham Kai or white boiled chicken with blanched crunchy taugeh or bean sprouts.

Patrons can choose to have these with savoury chicken rice or soft noodles in broth, known as Kai See Hor Fun. Lou Wong also offers many other side dishes, such as braised chicken feet, pork trotter and silken tofu.

If you’re craving some classic fried Cantonese noodles, then Tuck Kee is one of the best in town.  Among the main items they offer is the Yu Kong Hor, or moonlight Hor Fun noodles.

This dish consists of fried soft noodles topped with a raw egg. The egg gives it a silky finish that everyone loves. Additionally, you can also order their baby octopus in soy sauce, Wat Tan Hor noodles, and bean sprouts.
