Why Do Kids Hate Brushing Their Teeth? Change That Today!

Have you ever told your child about tooth fairies?

While some parents prefer for their children to not indulge in fairy tales, some do so to instil awe and imagination in their children. Today, we’d like to summon the help of these imaginary beings to make a mother’s job a tad bit easier.

If you’ve got a toddler, you know it’s difficult when it comes to any type of ‘wash-up’. When it comes to brushing their pearly whites, you might have experienced:

  1. The clampdown – they refuse to open their mouth at all.
  2. The crying and swallowing – okay, you are not sure how much toothpaste they have ingested.
  3. The excessive gagging – you don’t understand why they are overreacting to it!

Some have it easier, some have it worse. Trust me when I say I’ve heard mothers reminding their 18-year-old children to BRUSH THEIR TEETH!

Gasp!

The ‘Outside’ Help

If you are not keen on being committed to your child’s dental hygiene when they are adults, it is best to zero in on these habits when they are young. And to do that, we need a little ‘outside’ help and a reliable (and age-appropriate) toothbrush.

This is when you recruit the ‘elusive’ tooth fairy!

Tell the tale of a hardworking tooth fairy, seeking clean milk teeth, not rotten ones. Why? Because cleaner, whiter milk teeth will be exchanged for a bigger reward.

Give them a loveable story on why they should care for it, instead of commanding them. Even at a young age, they yearn for control and autonomy. When their wants are greeted with grit that is against their will, they tend to show signs of rebellion.

The Insider Job

With a reason to have clean teeth, you will also need to give them a tool to keep their pearly whites, white!

There are three types of Jordan toothbrushes designed just for kids, differentiated by their age.

  • Age 0-2

Babies are not born with bacteria that cause food decay. However, they are passed by parents and carers from the sharing of food. At six months, most babies develop their lower front teeth, that is also the time to introduce the toothbrush.

The Jordan Step 1, an award-winning design toothbrush fitted with extra soft bristles at the top for brushing and a soft biting ring at the bottom for the baby’s gums. To establish dental care routines, get your bub acquainted with the toothbrush by allowing them to meddle with it outside the confines of the bathroom.

  • Age 3-5

By age three, all 20 milk teeth would have emerged. Ten at the top, and ten at the bottom. Jordan Step 2 toothbrushes are perfect for cleaning children’s smaller milk teeth. It has soft bristles with a small but wide head. The blue section of the bristle is there to indicate how much toothpaste to use for brushing.

The Jordan Step 2 toothbrush also comes with a sand timer that can be attached to a mirror or tile (so your child knows how long they are to brush their teeth) and a cap (for hygiene purposes).

  • Age 6-9

At this age, some of their milk teeth would have fallen out, replaced by permanent teeth. Enforcing good dental habits is more important than ever.

If you have introduced the tooth fairy to your child, now is an exciting time to tell them and show them how essential clean teeth are. When the permanent teeth come, there is no other replacement. Tooth fairy ain’t gonna help too!

During this transition period, Jordan Step 3 toothbrush is made with the purpose to stop tooth decay! With soft bristles with a pyramid-shaped tip, it is ideal for cleaning both milk and permanent teeth. This toothbrush also comes with a stand so it can air-dry next to mommy and daddy’s toothbrush!

The Working Paste

What is a toothbrush without toothpaste? While many deem toothpaste to be just toothpaste, Jordan has developed two types just for the kids. One for children aged 0-5 and 6-12. It contains the recommended fluoride level and 0% SLS.

Children are sensitive to taste, but we are pretty sure your child will like this one!

Making Brushing Time ‘Prime Time’

What is fun about brushing teeth?

Honestly speaking, nothing!

No wonder our kids find teeth brushing such a drag. Despite the incentives you might give them (psst, sometimes bringing up the tooth fairy doesn’t even work), they can be adamant about not brushing their teeth.

Introducing the Jordan Brush Time For Kids mobile application, an app that allows you to customise a brush-time video. It is interactive in a way to get kids excited through song and visuals.

All you have to do is upload a selfie of your child, and they will be the star of their own cartoon music video. A song will come on to facilitate the teeth brushing activity. Your child can mimic the dance movements as they get brush, brush, brush!

The app also educates children on how to brush their teeth correctly. On the video, there is a timer to encourage longer brushing time of two minutes.
