Having a baby soon? Worried about the cost and expenses that it takes to deliver a happy, healthy baby? Well worry no more.

There’s plenty of options for mothers from all walks of life.

It’s important to note that while some hospitals (private ones mostly) offer promotions, some have standard rates that change depending on any complications that arise during the delivery.

Moreover, some hospitals also require the patient to request a quotation first from their doctor of choice.

In these cases, the doctors will recommend the appropriate maternity packages for the mum-to-be based on their expert medical advice.

Whatever you choose, make sure it’s the best decision for you and your family.

Here are a list of public and private hospitals as well as the maternity packages and delivery charges that they offer.

Public Hospitals

Hospital Kuala Lumpur

Established in 1870, Hospital Kuala Lumpur is the largest hospital under the Ministry of Health of Malaysia.

It is considered to be one of the biggest hospitals in Asia. HKL now has over 53 departments, over 7000 workers and almost 100 professions and disciplines.

Their specialisations include general medicine, emergency and trauma, genetics, neurology and radiology.

While they don’t offer specific maternity packages as part of a promotion, here are the standard rates for maternity services for Hospital Kuala Lumpur.

Hospital Canselor Tungku Mukhriz (UKM)

Established in 1997, HCTM began as part of The Faculty of Medicine UKM before being converted to a teaching hospital.

Located in Bandar Tunku Razak, Cheras, HCTM now has over 15 disciplines, 1054 beds, 3873 staff members and 63 wards.

Their specialisations include family medicine, psychiatry, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, radiology and obstetrics and gynaecology.

HCTM does not offer maternity packages, but here are their standard maternity rates (go to page 39).

Semi-Government

Hospital Selayang

Located in the Gombak District, Selayang Hospital now has over 960 inpatient beds and 20 clinical disciplines.

They have a wide range of specialisations including gastroenterology, rheumatology, hepatology, hepatobiliary surgery, vitreoretinal surgery, colorectal surgery, microsurgery, and renal service.

Being a referral hospital it provides specialist outpatient service for referred cases only.

Hospital Selayang does not offer promotional maternity packages, but here are the standard rates. You are able to choose what kind of bed/room you want to stay in.

Pusat Perubatan Universiti Malaya (PPUM/UMMC)

UMMC was established under the Faculty of Medicine at The University of Malaya in Singapore in 1949. To cater to the shortage of doctors, it was converted into a medical institution in 1961.

Presently, it’s one of the oldest and largest teaching hospitals in Malaysia. Located in Pantai Dalam, Kuala Lumpur it now has over 1000 beds, over 11 disciplines and over 1000 medical professionals and staff members.

Their specialisations include paediatrics, nutrition, oncology, gynaecology, surgery and sports medicine.

PPUM does not offer specific maternity packages, but here are their standard rates, but you won’t be able to choose the room/bed.

Private Hospitals

Pantai Hospital Cheras

Situated near Kuala Lumpur’s city center, Pantai Hospital Cheras offers a wide variety of medical services including maternity care.

With a capacity of 127 beds, the hospital boasts a team of over 70 highly skilled consultants and four full-time medical officers.

They offer  a wide range of medical services and specialties, including neurology, ophthalmology, internal medicine, orthopedics, and more, Pantai Hospital Cheras is committed to ensuring patient and customer satisfaction.

As part of Pantai Holdings Sdn Bhd (Pantai Group), which operates a total of 14 hospitals, the Cheras facility contributes to the broader network under Parkway Pantai Limited, a subsidiary of IHH Healthcare Berhad (IHH).

They currently offer three types of maternity packages, based on room/bed charges.

You can choose either single-bedded, two-bedded or four-bedded rooms. Aside from the rooms, the services provided are the same for all three packages.

These include newborn assessment, pain relief/entonox, hearing test and blood test (TSH, G6PD, blood group, vaccination (BCG, hepatitis B). Does not include epidural, high risk cases (diabetes, hypertension) or special delivery (forceps, vacuum, induced, twins, breech).

KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital

KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital was established in as part of KPH healthcare group, one of the leading private healthcare providers in the region with more than 29 years experience in the healthcare industry.

It now has 232 beds and more than 1000 medical consultants.

The hospital specialises in cardiology, bariatric surgery, oncology, in vitro fertilization (ivf), orthopedic, paediatric & neonatology, and health screening.

KPJ Damansara does not offer specific maternity packages, but here are their starting rates.

However you are allowed to choose what room you want to stay in. For more information on charges and rates, you can contact the specialist of your choice for a quotation.

However, this does not include any extra treatments you may need during delivery, so your final charge may be higher if there are complications.

Subang Jaya Medical Centre (Sime Darby)

Established in 1985 as part of a Ramsay Sime Darby Health Care, SJMC is a multi-disciplinary tertiary care private hospital located in Subang Jaya.

As of 2022, the hospital is equipped with over 400 beds and has over 60 disciplines. Their specialisations include anaesthesiology, breast surgery, cardiology, cardiothoracic surgery, dermatology, and gynaecology.

SJMC does not offer specific maternity packages, but they do have offer maternity services with a starting rate.

However, you will have to make an enquiry or book an appointment online with the doctor of their choice for a quotation. The doctor will choose the appropriate maternity package based on the mother’s needs.

Consultation only: RM 235
Normal delivery: RM5000 (normal without epidural or complications)

Gleneagles Kuala Lumpur

Established in 1957 by the British Assocation as a 45-bed nursing home, Gleneagles Hospital has since become one of the pioneers in medical breakthroughs with international experts, modern equipment and the latest technology.

It now has over 380 beds, 160 medical consultants, and spes specializing in more than 30 specialties. Their specialies include paediatrics, cardiology, ENT, infectious disease, haemato-oncology, spinal surgery and obstetrics and gynaecology.

Gleneagles KL does not offer specific maternity packages but they do have standard rates and you can choose which room you want to stay in.

Assunta Hospital

Located in Petaling Jaya, Assunta Hospital started out as a tiny clinic commissioned by the Catholic Hierarchy in Kuala Lumpur in 1954.

It has since become a 245-bedded private hospital with over 100 medica specialists.

Specialist doctors cover a wide range of specialties and subspecialties such as interventional cardiology; open heart surgery; orthopaedic; general surgery for both adult and paediatric patients; internal medicine, nephrology, urology, ENT, obstetrics and gynaecology.

Assunta Hospital offers two types of maternity packages for expectant mothers based on type of birth (normal or Caesarean).

Both packages include continuous maternal and fetal monitoring including labour, screenings including newborn hearing test, vaccinations (vitamin K, BCG & Hepatitis B- 1ST Dose), full medical and hospital fees, and consultation fees for obstetrician and pediatrician upon birth.

Tung Shin Hospital

Founded by the last Kapitan China of Kuala Lumpur in 1881, Tung Shin Hospital was initially established as a traditional Chinese medical facility.

Located in Kuala Lumpur, it has since become a private hospital dealing in over 20 disciplines and offering both modern medicine and traditional Chinese medical treatments.

Its Chinese Medical divisions offers acupuncture, internal medicine, dermatology, oncology and even gynaecological treatments.

Their conventional medical specialisations include orthodontics, ophthalmology, pediatric surgery, urology, psychiatry and obstetrics and gynaecology.

Tung Shin Hospital offers two types of maternity packages based on type of birth (normal and Caeserean).

However, charges for room rentals are separate. Both packages include meals, delivery suite/operation theatre fee, consultant’s fees, nursing care, breastfeeding support, newborn examination & consultation, hearing test, vaccination (BCG, hepatitis B) vitamin K injection, blood Test (TSH, blood Group & G6PD), and nursing care.

University Malaya Specialist Centre

UM Specialist Centre (UMSC) is a tertiary medical centre initially established in 1998 at University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) before shifting to its own building at Jalan Universiti, Petaling Jaya in 2007.

It is adjacent to the largest teaching hospital in Malaysia, UMMC and the oldest Faculty of Medicine founded in 1905.

It now has over 100 facilitated inpatient beds, more than 270 consultants, 400 medical professionals and assistants, 40 clinic rooms and 4 dental clinics.

Its specialisations include dermatology, neurology, palliative care, geriatrics and obstetrics and gynaecology.

UMSC offers two maternity packages based on type of birth (normal, Caeserean).

Both packages include professional fees for obstetrician/gynaecologist, delivery charges, consultation, anaesthesia/anaesthesiologist procedure fees, maternal monitoring, routine medical supplies, meals, and nursing care.

Excluding epidural, assisted delivery (induction, forceps, vacuum).

Applicable only for self-paying patients only (insurance not allowed). 

Maternity rates:

Normal: RM4999 (2 days 1 night, single-bedded)
Caeserean : RM9999 (2 days 1 night, single-bedded)

Sunway Medical Centre

Established in 1999, Sunway Medical Centre is an Australian Council on Healthcare Standards (ACHS) accredited private hospital located in Malaysia’s first fully integrated green township of Sunway City.

Located in Petaling Jaya, the hospital currently offers comprehensive tertiary healthcare services, with 616 licensed beds, 180 consultation suites, and 13 operating theatres. 

The hospital has over 1000 dedicated personnel running its operations, including medical consultants, pharmacists, nurses and many others.

Sunway Medical offers a 25% of all charges for maternity packages. They offer two types of packages based on type of birth (normal, Caeserean).

Both packages include baby’s first polaroid family, baby’s footprint card, moment of joy video, hospital stay, nursery care, vaccination, screenings & tests, registration & administration, meals, and caring nursing services. Excludes doctor’s fees & additional procedures and valid for self-paying patients (insurance not allowed).

Normal: RM4000
Caesarean: RM6000

Columbia Asia

One of the biggest private healthcare facilities in South East Asia, Columbia Asia currently has 19 medical facilities in several countries in the region including 13 in Malaysia, 3 in Vietnam and 3 in Indonesia.

The hospital’s many medical professional specialises in over 30 disciplines including general surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology, orthopaedics and internal medicine. It now houses over 200 beds in its facilities.

Columbia Asia offers two maternity packages for expectant mothers based on the type of birth (normal and Caesarean).

All three packages include double-bedded room, consultation and procedure fees, pediatrician and anesthetist, newborn hearing screening, nursery care, and vaccination (BCG & hepatitis B).

Does not include epidural, assisted delivery, jaundice treatment or extended stay.

Finding the Right Hospital for You

So now that you’ve weighed the pros and cons of each option, now’s the time to make a decision.

Of course, you should ideally settle for a hospital as soon as you find out you’re pregnant, but there many be hundreds of reasons why mothers may choose to change hospitals halfway through their pregnancy.

Whatever the case is, it’s important to make sure that the delivery charges suit your financial situation at the moment.

You may be tempted to opt for the most expensive choice for the best treatment, or the cheapest option so that you can save up for the future.

But have the discussion with your spouse and be sure to do your own research.

Hopefully you’ll find the best place to deliver your bundle of joy.
