The first step to handling a meltdown is to take a deep breath and remain calm. A deep breath can help parents feel calmer and regain control of the situation.

Its completely normal for a parent to feel guilty, frustrated, and even angry when meltdowns happen.

But, its important to recognize and accept these feelings, and to try to remain calm and compassionate.

Once the parent has regained control of the situation, then it’ll be easier to understand why the meltdown is happening.

Make sure to speak in a low, soothing voice and provide reassurance and comfort until the child is calm.

Provide a Safe Environment

It’s important to create a safe environment for kids to express their emotions without fear of judgement or punishment.

This means providing a space that is quiet and free from distractions and avoiding physical contact, such as grabbing or restraining the child.

Parents should also ensure that the child feels secure and understood, while also setting boundaries and expectations.

This will help the child to understand the expectations and their behaviour, while also feeling safe and secure in their environment.

Encourage Deep Breathing

Deep breathing is a simple and effective tool that can help kids calm down and regain control of their emotions.

Teaching your child deep breathing techniques allows them to focus on their breath, making them more aware of their body and surroundings.

When kids are in the midst of a meltdown, parents can encourage them to take deep breaths. Demonstrate the technique by taking deep breaths with their kids, and counting each breath out loud.

Deep breathing can help reduce feelings of anger and frustration, allowing kids to gain a sense of control over their emotions. When kids have calmed down, parents can talk to them and help them identify and express their feelings in a healthy manner.

Help Kids Identify Their Emotions

This can be difficult, especially with kids always throwing toddler tantrums, as they may not be able to verbalize what’s going on.

It’s important to observe the situation and look for clues. Is the child over-tired or hungry?

Are they feeling overwhelmed or frustrated? Is there something in the environment that is causing stress or discomfort?

Also, parents can help their kids identify their emotions by engaging in active listening. This involves listening to the child’s emotions without judgment, reflecting on what the child is feeling, and offering validation.

At the same time, encourage kids to express their feelings. Rather than telling the child how to feel, parents should provide a safe and offer comfort and reassurance to the child.

Children who understand and can describe their emotions can better manage them.

Offer Positive Reinforcement

When children can manage their emotions, provide positive reinforcement by praising them for their efforts, showing them affection, and rewarding them for their accomplishments.

Use words of encouragement and praise to help the child feel better and to help to reduce their stress.

Moreover, offer rewards or treats to show the child that their efforts are appreciated.

Also, remember that meltdowns are a normal part of life and that kids should not be punished for having them.

Model Positive Behaviour

Parents play an important role in modelling positive behaviour when dealing with kids’ meltdowns. Children need to see their parents healthily handling their own emotions.

First off, parents should remain composed and not react angrily when their child is having a meltdown to show that it is okay to feel overwhelmed and that it is possible to regain control of the situation.

Another way to model positive behaviour is to use empathy. Listen to the kids’ feelings and help them learn to express their feelings in a healthy way and recognize that their emotions are important and valid.

It is equally critical for parents to be encouraging and supportive of their children. Assist children in developing good coping mechanisms for their emotions. This can have a long-term positive impact on their children’s mental health.

Understand the Underlying Causes of Meltdowns

When it comes to dealing with kids meltdowns, parents need to understand the underlying causes. A meltdown is typically a sign of frustration, anger, or fear.

Try to identify what is causing the outburst. It could be due to their environment, such as a noisy or chaotic environment, or it could be due to the child’s development, such as not being able to verbalise their feelings in a socially acceptable way.

According to Child Mind Institute, some of the common causes of frequent meltdowns are:

  • ADHD or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
  • Anxiety
  • Learning problems
  • Depression and irritability
  • Autism
  • Sensory processing issue or being overwhelmed by stimulation

So, parents, don’t feel guilty when kids’ meltdowns happen.
