Choosing Your Obstetrician | Gynaes in Malaysia

Choosing your obstetrician could be a daunting task as you would like to have someone that you trust and get along well with to take care of you and your baby during pregnancy and labour. There are several issues that you need to consider prior to choosing your obstetrician:

1)  Decide where you want to deliver. Is the clinic/hospital location convenient, provides the necessary medical facility and the medical expenses are affordable for you?
2)  Ask recommendations from your friends, relatives or the hospital. Remember just because they like the obstetrician does not necessarily mean you would too.
3)  If you have a pre-existing medical condition or other obstetric factors that makes you in a higher risk pregnancy? If so, then it may be best to choose an obstetrician who specializes or have had experience in taking care of patients with similar condition. In addition, does the clinic or hospital have adequate medical facilities and expertise to care for you?
4) Does the doctor work solo or group practice with a group of doctors?
5) Does a male / female obstetrician matters to you?
6) Schedule an appointment with the obstetrician. Do you and your partner feel comfortable with him? Is your concern or question answered satisfactorily? Will the obstetrician meet your pregnancy needs or labour requirements?
Take time to research and decide which obstetrician you would be most happy to manage your pregnancy.

We know how hard it is to find that one special gynae who will answer to your every need and provide you with the assurance you crave for when something in pregnancy screams out.

We took a walk around our forum and found mothers with good recommendations of various gynaes in Malaysia. In no particular order, here’s the list as divided by the various hospitals.

May 2013 – MamaAtWork
My wife gave birth in Pantai in May 2013. During monthly checkups, we saw a Dr with a private clinic which kept to appointment times; thus there was little to no wait time. The delivery was smooth; all but one staff respected all of our wishes (for a natural birth). Would go there again.

Oct 2012. Meena Sreenivasan (New Straits Times)
She says: “I was into the third trimester. I was referred to Dr Patricia in Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur for a second opinion. I was given three choices. The first was no mastectomy or abortion, but chemotherapy. The second was to remove the lump, keep the baby and do chemotherapy. The third option was to go for mastectomy, abort the baby and go with the chemotherapy.” https://www.nst.com.my/life-times/health/the-long-quiet-fight-1.160523#ixzz2AWPqjcjz

Nov 2011 – I’d been a patient with Dr Tang SDMC. Delivered my baby boy under natural method. Am pleased with her but be prepared for the long queue. Well, to avoid disappointment during visits, jot down your questions in a paper and ask her all you want… her visit is normally short and nice. Dun think she is pro in c-sect but her experience in c-sect sure comes in handy should there be any complications in the labour process. Just make sure you clarify with her that you opt for natural delivery… Well, if any doctor trying to coax you to go for c-sect, ask for all the reason behind it…
