School Holiday Survival Guide: Activities to Keep Your Kids Busy

school-holidays

School holidays are a time of fun and experimentation.

Your kids have all this time to truly explore their interests and have an amazing time doing it.

After all, without homework and school, there is plenty of opportunity to do things they love.

But sometimes they may need a little help from you to truly make the most of their school holidays.

Here are some that you definitely should try out with your kids.

Beat the Boredom: Creative School Holiday Ideas for Kids

Host a Playdate

If your child is a social butterfly, you could try and organise with the other parents to host a playdate at your house or theirs.

This means that you child can catch up with their classmates over the long holidays and have some actual fun.

After all, there are not many opportunities for that at school other than recess.

If there’s something that your kids have always wanted to do but never got the chance, now is the time. Whether that’s having a pool party, a movie night or even a sleepover.

Don’t be afraid to take it outside either. Some kids love going to arcades or public parks.

Organise Their Room

If there’s ever a time for some décor change, it’s during the school holidays. You’re not on a time crunch and there’s plenty of opportunity to make some well-needed changes.

If your kids are starting to outgrow their childhood, you may need to help them reorganise their room.

Feel free to redecorate, rearrange or revamp their entire room if that’s what they want. Repaint the walls, bring in some storage solutions and rearrange the furniture a bit to make it seem like a new space.

Finish a Puzzle

Puzzles are one of those things that can occupy a huge portion of the day.

If your kids have found a penchant for completing jigsaw puzzles, then this may just be the entertainment they need.

Depending on the difficulty level, puzzles can take anywhere between 3 hours to several days to complete. But that is what makes the activity so fun.

If they have siblings, they can join in too.

And its definitely not something that can or should be rushed.

Enrol Them in An Online Class

If your kids have an insatiable knowledge to learn new things, you can always sign them up for some online classes.

This is a good way for them to acquire new skills and interests. These can be simple sciences workshops, arts and crafts sessions, cooking classes, and even financial literacy programmes.

There really is no limit when it comes to what your kids can learn.

While some classes may not exactly be cheap, they are worth it if your kids are truly passionate about the subject.

Just be sure that they actually want it and are not forced into it.

Take Them on a Field Trip

Forget zoos and public parks, there are dozens of places you can take your kids that will not only entertain them but also educate and inspire them.

Malaysia’s Museum of Natural History located in Putrajaya, for instance, can teach them all about different animals as well as the science of biology and evolution.

The entrance fees are relatively cheap

Alternatively, you can take them to the National Science Centre.

Let Them Explore the Outdoors

If your kids are older, they may have friends in the neighbourhood that they can hang out with or ride their bicycles with.

It’s important not to keep your kids cooped up indoors all the time. Or have their free time spent only with their family.

They need to explore the outside world too.

This helps them build independence and even boosts their immunity.

Just be sure they’re not alone and that they take the necessary precautions and know all about stranger danger. Especially if they’re not just playing in the backyard where they’re in your line of sight.

If you want an added layer of protection, let them carry a phone or smartwatch with the GPS turned on so you’ll know exactly where they are at any given time.

Optimise the School Holidays

Help your kids make the most out of their school holidays, parents.

They wont get another chance after this once they’re busy again with school and homework. There is so much to be done during this time.

But conversely, there is also nothing wrong with letting your kids take a break and not do anything.

After all, in this day and age of productivity obsession, we’re accustomed to avoid wasting time. But time spent resting and recovering from the stress and worry of life is still time well spent.

So if your kids want to kick back this school holidays, join them for some well-needed R&R and who knows, it may just be the thing you need too.
