What To Do When Your Child Has Nasal Allergies

Some mothers wake their children up for school.

Some mothers, however, are greeted by sniffles and a sneezing fit, and it is a heartbreaking sight. With watery eyes and red noses, their voices have a touch of hollowness as they try to make up words as they breathe through their mouths.

Sigh.

It gets better as the day goes on, but in the mornings… Oh boy, the mornings are a challenge.

Nasal allergies (also called allergic rhinitis) is a common health issue among children. It may be seasonal, but sometimes it continues well into adulthood.

Common allergens that cause these allergies include airborne pollen, mould and dust. These nasties cause the eyes, nose, and throat to itch and swell. Fluid then builds up in nasal passages causing a blocked nose. To remedy it, they try to sniff it away and prod on the nose. It will then get more irritated, and they might find themselves on a sneezing train.

But, don’t stress, it can be remedied!

Check Their Toys

If you see sniffles as a morning pattern, it is time to check their toys. Playthings such as stuffed animals can be a haven for dust mites and other allergens.

Those cute, furry and cuddly soft toys collect plenty of dust and germs while they are being carried everywhere by your child. Sometimes these furry dolls are dropped on the floor where dust gets stuck to their fur. Sometimes, it gets wet when it gets splashed with water. When it is not dried well, mould can grow. These toys could be a source of allergies for your child.

It may be tough to remove the plushies from your child, especially if they are attached to them. Therefore, you can make it a point to wash the toys regularly in hot water and dry them out thoroughly.

Remember to check their toy box often as well, because it can collect dust if not wiped down and cleaned routinely.

Simple Home Remedies

What do you do when you see your child having a full-on nasal allergy, and they are set to go for their online classes?

First, have plenty of water on hand. Get them to drink a large glass of water. They should continue drinking extra amounts of water throughout the day to encourage hydration and better moisture in the mucous membranes to trap allergens.

Itchy, watery eyes can make for a miserable kid. Try warm compresses by applying a warm, moist towel to your child’s face, dabbing the nose, cheeks and eyes to ease the discomfort.

Steam can also help. Have your child sit in the bathroom with the door closed while you run a hot shower to offer some temporary relief from nasal congestion.

Remove Carpets and Thick Drapes

Take a glance around your home, especially where your child spends most of their time. Do you see carpets, upholstered furniture, thick drapes or knitted blankets?

These household items may contribute to your child’s allergic reaction as they collect and trap dust. If possible, avoid having carpets. You might also want to rethink the upholstered furniture and heavy drapes. In fact, some might even go to the extent of getting rid of any furnishings covered with fabric!

On the other hand, some may be horrified at this suggestion because it sounds like you’ll have to redesign your house.

Don’t worry, we do understand that some materials prone to allergens make the home more comfortable. After all, a wooden bench for a sofa simply won’t do! As an alternative, you can limit contact with dust mites by using allergen-proof upholstery and pillow covers, and washing them regularly. It works well as part of an overall plan to reduce allergens in your home.

But if that does not sound feasible, check out the next point.

Install An Air Purifier

The first line of treatment for allergies is to avoid having allergens. However, we know that a home can’t be 100% free from allergens – unless you are looking to recreate a cleanroom condition. Even after constant cleaning and changing the sheets, thinking that the air in your home is clean would be wishful thinking.

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, concentrations of some pollutants can be two to five times higher inside our homes than outdoors.

Yikes!

So, what can you do?

An air purifier with a HEPA filter can reduce the likelihood of experiencing allergic sinusitis. HEPA is the acronym for High-Efficiency Particulate Air. These super filters trap 99.95% of particles that are as small as 0.1 microns.

There were originally created for lab and factory use (like the cleanroom). Today, we find them in many consumer products like air purifiers.

Instead of fussing and fearing over unseen dust, a good air purifier will rid these sinus-inducing allergens for you!

Consider the Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde TP09 Air Purifier

The Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde TP09 air purifier is Dyson’s latest and most advanced air purifier. It captures viruses, allergens and ultrafine dust. It even captures and destroys formaldehyde continuously. Formaldehyde is one of the most common indoor pollutants. Furniture, bedding, and flooring can emit it for years.

How does it manage to suck up these invisible nasties?

Well, the Dyson air purifier comes with high-quality HEPA H13 filters. These filters are scientifically tested to remove 99.95% of airborne particles, such as ultrafine dust, allergens, bacteria and virus.

To prevent pollutants leaking back into the air, it’s not just the filters that are sealed with HEPA H13 filters, it’s the whole purifier. So what goes inside, stays inside.

The Dyson Purifier Cool Formaldehyde TP09 air purifier is not only super, but it is also smart!

It automatically senses and detects pollutants, with real-time reporting via the LCD screen on the air purifier and the Dyson Link App. It senses and tells you which of the five different pollutants are present in real-time, i.e. PM2.5, PM 10, Formaldehyde, VOCs and NO2.

Plus, it is the only air purifier with Air Multiplier technology. This technology draws in distant pollutants and projects purified air throughout the whole room.

In with the nasties, out with the niceties!
