Mum, can penguins fly?

No, they cant.

Why, aren’t they birds?

Hmmmm… can you stop asking now? Mum is actually quite busy.

Out of curiousity, our cute little children always have a ton of questions for us. We have answers for some, but not every single question.

Well, let’s ask the StoryBots!

Ask the StoryBots TV series features five little creatures who live in a computer. Their tasks are to track down answers to life’s biggest questions, often by asking celebrities and making up cool tunes.

As they explore all areas of the world, they would ask other creatures for help to discover the answers. Once they have the answer, the StoryBots will report to their boss. They will then share their findings with the curious kid, too.

They will learn the answers to some of life’s questions through the show, such as:

  • How does night happen?
  • Why do I have to brush my teeth?
  • How do cell phones work?

Besides being visually distinctive, this animated show is both educational and entertaining. Both you and your children will laugh out loud while watching the Storybots’ answers-discovering journey.

If you wish to have some extended activities with your kids after this award-winning show, here are some suggestions:

  • Ask your children what they would like to ask the StoryBots.
  • Ask your children where do they usually find their answers when they have questions.
  • Ask your children what are some positive qualities (e.g. perseverance, curiousity and teamwork) shown by the StoryBots.

If your children enjoy Science immensely, Emily’s Wonder Lab is surely a perfect fit for them. Hosted by the Science expert Emily Calenrelli and six kid scientists, each 15-minute episode revolves around a Science theme such as “florescence”.

Emily would first start off with explaining the theme and demonstrating an experiment. The kid scientists will then have a dance party on a pool of Oobleck or cover themselves in glow-in-the-dark paint.

What if your children wishes to try out an experiment?

Worry not, each episode ends with Emily demonstrating an experiment that your children can try at home. For instance, you can make a homemade lava lamp from water, vegetable oil, some salt and phosphorescent powder. Do keep in mind, you will need to be around your children at the time and you might need to purchase the required ingredients.

In short, Emily is certainly the Science teacher we wished to have as young kids. This show is an excellent way to get your children interested in Science, too. More excitingly, you get to explore and try out science experiments with your children at home!

Stay curious and keep exploring!

Aren’t you sick of explaining and yelling at your picky eater children about healthy food? Maybe it’s time for you to reach out to some educational shows on Netflix.

There’s one that focuses on food, cultures, and healthy eating – Waffles + Mochi.

Waffles + Mochi mainly features two cute puppets. Waffles is a half Yeti, half frozen Eggos creature, while Mochi is a palm-sized puppet version of the Japanese food. Both of them are from the “land of frozen foods”.

They are on their journey to secure fruit sorter jobs in an attractively animated neighbourhood grocery store in New York. This is where they meet “Mrs. O” (starred by the former First Lady, Michelle Obama), a friendly neighbour.

Alongside with Mrs O, Waffles and Mochi spend each episode with chefs and culinary experts around the world to explore on specific food and spices, such as tomatoes, potatoes, salt, mushrooms and eggs.

Michelle Obama’s Commitment On Children’s Nutrition

This show is in fact a continuous effort from Michelle Obama in her fight for children’s nutrition and combating childhood obesity.

As each episode runs for 20-25 minutes, it aims to educate children that food is fascinating and fresh food is delicious. Focusing on basic ingredients such as tomatoes, mushrooms, pickles, herbs and spices, children explore foods widely with the puppets who gloriously travel around the globe.

During their journey from Peru to Japan and Oakland, while on visits with local chefs, the puppets never disgust on trying any new dish or ingredients. On top of that, they always make a point to describe both the tastes and textures of the dish or ingredients.

Overall, each episode of Waffle + Mochi is full of fun facts, cooking tips and warm life lessons which our children can surely benefit tremendously from.

If you have, you can already picture how heartfelt this series is for children to learn via Mama Llama’s lessons.

Show #5: CoComelon

CoComelon is an educational show on Netflix for our little ones, as young as two-years-old. (Photo credit: What’s New on Netflix)

Can toddlers enjoy educational show at such a young age?

Of course, they can do it with CoComelon!

CoComelon TV series offers animated music videos for toddlers and preschoolers. Each episode runs for an hour which features around 20 songs. Children can learn about letters, numbers, animal sounds and more while watching CoComelon music videos.

You can expect to hear some classic nursery rhymes such as “Ba Ba Black Sheep” and “Five Little Monkeys” from the TV series, too. As the music videos feature the main character J.J., his family, and his classmates, our toddlers and young preschoolers would certainly fall for it.

Here’s why.

They can completely resonate with the main character as they, too, have a similar regular toddler routine such as taking a nap, spending time with family and learning things at preschool.

On top of this, the toddlers and preschoolers can understand the lyrics and sing along in a short time as the songs are slow and simple.

However, it poses a minor threat for you to limit your children’s screen time as it is an 1-hour show and your children might have a hard time in stopping from watching the show midway.

To solve this issue, you can talk to your children on how long can they watch the show and encourage them to dance and sing along within the time frame.
