Aurelius Healthcare Aims to Educate 10,000 Malaysians on How to Perform Breast Self-Examination

Aurelius Healthcare, the healthcare group behind Aurelius Hospital Nilai and Aurelius Hospital Alor Setar (scheduled to operate in Q4 2023), is launching the #HuntThatLump campaign to raise awareness around breast and prostate cancer.

Working with local clinics and general practitioners in Nilai and Seremban, Aurelius Healthcare aims to be the first healthcare group in Malaysia to educate 10,000 participants on how to perform breast self-examinations (BSE) accurately and independently.

According to the National Strategic Plan for Cancer Control Programme (NSPCCP) 2021-2025, Malaysia has seen an increase of 11% in the number of cancer cases reported between 2007-2011 and 2012-2016.

In the report, breast and prostate cancer was highlighted as the top ten most common cancers in the country. With early diagnosis as the most important factor in increasing one’s survival rate, Aurelius Healthcare has lined up a series of educational activities for its campaign themed #HuntThatLump.

Dr Jenson Sow Wen Jen, Resident Consultant Oncologist at Aurelius Hospital Nilai said, “Breast and prostate cancer is often detected only at a later stage. A late detection in cancer leads to a delay in treatment and chances of survival. Through our campaign, we hope to promote a health-literate community around common cancers in Malaysia. We want to encourage Malaysians to be more health-conscious and actively take actions, as simple as knowing how to perform breast self-examination, to be in control of their health.”

This also marks the second year that Aurelius Hospital Nilai is partnering with Lembaga Penduduk dan Pembangunan Keluarga Negara (LPPKN) to provide 300 free mammograms to the public at Aurelius Hospital Nilai.

The hospital is also supporting Power House Wanita Gemilang, an initiative under the Negeri Sembilan state by providing educational session to its members.

Dato’ Amir Firdaus Abdullah, Group Managing Director and Chairman at Aurelius Healthcare, said, “Our main goal at Aurelius is always about elevating the healthcare standards in Malaysia and putting the community at the centre of our initiatives. Through the #HuntThatLump campaign, we want to educate more Malaysians to be equipped with greater awareness and knowledge towards breast and prostate cancer. We are also working closely with our partners in rolling out different initiatives that are set to be beneficial for the public. We’re committed to supporting the government’s initiatives in the healthcare sector and look forward to forming more public-private partnerships in the future.”

For the next three months, Malaysians can participate in various activities such as BSE, special promotional screening packages, rugby charity match, sports activities, moustache championship, and more.
