A lot more big growth to anticipate in the ten-month-old developmental milestones!

As your little one is now ten months old, you will be surprised by how fast he is growing to move around, play and communicate with you. You will notice that your baby is starting to have his favourite books, toys, songs and even games.

Let’s find out more about what exciting milestones your baby is going to achieve in his tenth month, shall we?

Ten-Month-Old Developmental Milestones

10-month-old Sleep

As your baby moves onto his tenth month, he might start to skip his morning nap. Instead, he would just take a long afternoon nap.

With this, you little one might seem to be very tired, super sensitive and irritable until he gets used to his new sleep schedule. What you need to do is just to move forward the time of his afternoon nap.

Generally, your ten-month-old baby is going to sleep for 14 hours per day. While sleeping for 11 to12 hours at night, he is going to have one to two naps for around 3 hours.

10-Month-Old Feeding

By the age of 10-month-old, your little one is going to be an expert in finger food!

As your baby needs 750 to 900 calories per day from his eighth month to his one-year-old, you can ensure the intake of calories and nutrient from solid food and  formula or breast milk. So, here’s how much a ten-month-old baby should eat.

  • If you are feeding your baby with formula, he should have six to eight ounces for five times a day.
  • If you are breastfeeding your baby, he should be breastfed for three to five times a day.
  • If you are trying to feed your baby with solid food, you can start with three meals with two snack times a day.

Here are some additional tips to ease your way through feeding your ten-month-old baby:

Key Milestones in Growth

In his tenth month, your baby is going to grow bigger and smarter. Here’s the average weight and height that you can expect from your ten-month-old baby.

  • Weight: Around 8.48 kg for a 10-month-old baby girl and 9.16 kg for a 10-month-old baby boy
  • Length: Around 71.37 cm for a 10-month-old baby girl and 73.40 cm for a 10-month-old baby boy

Though your little one grows and develop more brain cells, it’s still hard for him to screen out stimulation. As opposed to us who are able to screen out background noise such as the dog barking, your baby does not have the ability yet.

Thus, it’s better to take him to a quiet, dimly lit place when you wish for your baby to focus on eating or taking a nap. With this, your baby will be less crankier during the feeding or nap.

Key Milestones in Skill Development and Senses

Key Milestones in Movement

  • can squat down from a standing position
  • can roll from back to front and front to back
  • can crawl
  • can pull to stand
  • starts cruising (shuffling along while holding onto furniture)
  • gets into a sitting position without help
  • can use both hands independently of each other
  • explores things in different ways such as shaking, banging and throwing
  • can point or go for the items he wants
  • can pick up small objects with his thumb and pointer finger

As you might have realised, your little one is now making a lot more noise with what he has in his hands. While holding two toy blocks, he is going to bang the two together. Or, he might also have fun dropping and throwing things with his hands.

As annoying as it might seem, your baby is actually practising his fine-motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Therefore, instead of prohibiting your baby from throwing at all, you can try out these alternatives to retain its benefits and reduce its potential danger:

  • loves to listen to music

At his tenth month, your baby is able to understand and follow simple and one-step commands like “wave bye-bye“, “clap hands” and even “blow a kiss“. While being melted with his cute gestures and actions, you need to be aware that your baby might start to bite the things on his hands, or even you!

This is common as your little one has developed more teeth after months of teething. Instead of overreacting by scolding him or crying out loud, you can follow these five steps to resolve the issue:
