A Whole New World

Are you counting down the days to the arrival of your baby? Anytime now! Being a first-time mum is always gut-twisting yet there’s so much joy and excitement, isn’t it?! What do I do now? How do I handle a new baby? Why is she crying? So many questions, so much to do!

Well, there will definitely be adjustments that need to be made, but as new parents, things can get overwhelming—and that is the last thing we want during these exhilarating times. Let us help you break down a few main aspects so your first days at home with your new bub can be made as smooth as possible.

Don’t Be Shy!

I know, it’s tough. But the last thing a new mum should be embarrassed about is asking for help. Deep down, we all know that we can reach out for assistance, but the Asian side of us would always feel shy to “mafan” (disturb, intrude) others.

And so we try to wear the cape proud and shoulder everything on our own, even to the extent of breaking our own back, causing unwanted consequences. Before we come to that point, stop!

From being pregnant to giving birth, our body goes through a huge process of expanding, tearing, and contracting. At the same time, mentally, we are dealing with a lot more than just how to take care of ourselves, because we now have a baby to take into consideration! So, first things first, be kind to yourself.

Once you give birth, you are automatically a mother. However, this doesn’t mean you will automatically know how to do everything; and this includes feeding your newborn. Talk to a lactation specialist to learn about breastfeeding—they are called specialists for good reason.

After accomplishing the gargantuan task of birthing a baby, your body needs as much rest as you can get. Asking a close friend for or accepting a family member’s help will make your recovery that much more bearable, easier, and faster. Alternatively, arrange to cater daily meals for yourself and your family, which will take a huge load off your shoulder. Bottom line: Get help, sub out tasks—be it paid or a favour—your body and baby will thank you for it.

Spend Time with Your Baby

I know most women have some kind of compulsive tendency to get chores done ASAP and keep their living environment clean; it is the nurturing instinct in us. But between household chores and spending quality time with your new baby, the wiser-yet-not-always-the-easier choice here is pretty obvious.

Bonding with your newborn need not mean a whole lot of material things; in fact, the lesser, the better! Cradling, holding, gentle stroking are great, big steps to communicate with your baby that he is loved. The bond formed will contribute significantly to your baby’s emotional growth and that is pivotal to his health and all-around development.

If you don’t already know, skin-to-skin contact does wonders to a baby—be it full-term or premature. Simply remove your baby’s clothing down to only diapers and gently place her atop your bare skin. Be sure to snuggle under a blanket, this will help your baby feel safe and loved, just like when she was in your womb!

There are many ways still to engage with your babies: Singing, humming, speaking expressively, or giving gentle massages are all great ways. Babies thrive in a loving environment with constant skin contact. Dirty dishes and laundry can wait, but a baby, not so. He or she is growing every second! So, hang out with your baby more—guilt-free!

Diaper Me Happy

Babies live in diapers for a big part of their early years, or at least until she is potty-trained. Therefore, choosing a good quality diaper that is highly absorbent yet ultra-gentle is important. On the one hand, it will be beneficial on the baby’s skin. At the same time, taking into consideration the healing of the umbilical cord site is also very important.

Hence, look out for top sheets that are soft on your baby’s bum and waist area that is gentle to the touch. This is to avoid friction against the delicate skin. One of the main criteria of a diaper is to be absorbent, which will help to cut short contact time between your baby’s skin and the urine and stool.

When your baby is not constantly irritated by possible discomfort caused by his diapers, you can rest assured that he will eat, sleep, and play better. And that will help you to relax more!
