Motherhood Supermum Survey 2020: Gain Insights Into Malaysian Mums’ Digital Lifestyle, Shopping Behaviour & Post-MCO Life

With the dawn of a new era of technology, we now have generations of mums who are exposed to new applications and innovations at play that no previous generation was exposed to. From online shopping and e-wallets to food and daily essentials deliveries, this era has marked an upsurge in the e-commerce industry.

As the numbers of millennial mums in Malaysia are increasing at a rapid pace, Motherhood decided to get up close and personal with the iron ladies themselves to explore and unveil fascinating findings on the digital lifestyle of Malaysian mums in the year of 2020. In other words, a look at modern-day motherhood!

The survey was conducted on Motherhood.com.my from June to July 2020, with more than 700 respondents taking part in this survey. From our findings, we can conclude that the survey represents the voice of the modern generation of motherhood, where 98% of our mummies are between 24 and 44 years old, and in which 72% are currently active working mums.

The Digital Lifestyle of Malaysian Mums

  • Past 7 PM is when they rest their body and keep their fingertips busy 

No matter how busy they are with their daily lives, 63% of these digitally-savvy mums are most active online past 7 pm, and 62% of them will spend at least 5 hours on the Internet every day! 

  • English is Her Preferred Language + Parenting Tips and Recipes are Among Her Top Online Searches 

The data revealed that despite being in a multi-racial country, 72% of the mums prefer to read anything on the Internet in English, while 56% of them are more comfortable reading in Malay, and the remaining 10% in Chinese.

Malaysian mums also like to search for parenting advice, recipes, tips on health, fashion and beauty, easy DIY videos, travelogues, as well as family events and happenings. 

  • Her Go-to Sources When She Needs Some Help 

In Malaysia, Motherhood found that these mums have their own reliable sources that they go to for when they need a little help. 

78% of them opt for parenting websites when they are looking for some additional info regarding their family’s health, 89% will also turn to parenting websites for when they need tips on parenting, and 85% of these mums will get the latest recipes from social media, celebrities, and influencers.

Malaysian Mums’ Online Shopping Behaviour

With online shopping has taken on a greater prominence for the past few months, Motherhood discovered that 98% of Malaysian mums shop online AT LEAST once a month. 

Looking deeper into the data, most of the mums tend to buy a lot of these items for their family online – home and living products, groceries, household cleaning supplies, and home appliances, as well as beauty and skincare products. 

Whereas, for mums with babies, they will mostly buy formula milk, diapers, toiletries, toys, and clothes online. Thanks to the convenience of online shopping, Malaysian mums are now able to get these daily essentials right at their fingertips. Get more details here

Post-MCO Life and Choices of Malaysian Mums

As the daily lives of people all over the world have changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most of the mums agree that their primary mission is now to ensure a safer and healthier home for their families. 

With the new restrictions on public movement, Malaysian mums now have even more worries to bear as they are constantly worried about the health of their families.

Data also showed that 73% of mums are hungry for a new foodie adventure, where they cannot wait to dine-out at their favourite restaurants within 3 months after MCO. 

71% miss going to malls, while 44% of them are excited about their next family vacation. Last but not least, 33% of these mummies are ever-ready for some cinematic entertainment after MCO. 

These are just some of the findings in the Motherhood Supermum Survey 2020. It is interesting to see how things are changing and how Malaysian mums themselves are adopting new behaviours and social lifestyles due to the pandemic.
