Mummy Shares: How I Practice Self-Care as A New Mum

As a new mum, taking care of myself can seem like the last thing on my to-do list.

With the many responsibilities that come with caring for my little one, I frequently overlook the necessity of tending to my own needs.

However, it’s important to realise that practicing self-care holds great significance for new mums.

If we don’t take care of ourselves, it can have a negative impact on our wellbeing and our ability to take care of our baby.

According to Mayo Clinic, self-care is the practice of caring for one’s own health, wellbeing and happiness. It is an essential component of stress relief and wellness.

Making time for yourself may feel indulgent or selfish, but that is far from the truth.

Even small acts of self-care or self-kindness can go a long way in decreasing the feelings of exhaustion, burnout, stress, and even depression that busy mothers often feel.

That is why I attempt to implement these thirteen strategies to practise self-care as a new parent.

Get Enough Sleep

As a mum, getting enough sleep is crucial for my wellbeing and ability to care for my baby.

I know it can be challenging, especially with a newborn, but I try to prioritise my sleep.

I aim for seven to nine hours of sleep each night and take naps during the day when my baby is sleeping.

Resting when my little one does helps me recharge and stay energised throughout the day.

Eat a Healthy Diet

Taking care of my baby starts with taking care of myself.

I believe in the power of a nutritious diet to keep me healthy and strong.

I make sure to include plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins in my meals.

Eating well-balanced meals not only fuels my body but also gives me the energy I need to keep up with my little bundle of joy.

Exercise Regularly

Exercise is not only beneficial for my physical health but also for my mental wellbeing.

I find that even a short walk around the block can do wonders for my mood.

Regular exercise helps me reduce stress and anxiety and boosts my energy levels.

Whether it’s a Zumba session or a quick workout at home, finding time for physical activity is an essential part of my self-care routine.

Be Kind to Mum-self
