At this moment of his life, your lovely toddler is ready for his 15-month-old developmental milestones. While he is able to walk quite well to discover the world, you can get him to explore more of his senses of smell and taste.

On the other hand, your 15-month-old is now ready to help with minor chores such as carrying small things and picking up books and toys.

With this in mind, here are what you can expect from your 15-month-old toddler.

Fifteen-Month-Old Developmental Milestones

15-month-old Sleep

Similarly to the previous months, your little one is going to have a established sleeping routine. Sleeping around 13.5 hours per day, your toddler is going to have a 2-hour nap during the day time and sleep for 11.5 hours during the night time.

Putting aside teething and occasional illness, your little one might refuse to sleep due to:

  • the desire to stay up for more play time
  • nightmares

To resolve the issue of staying up, we should establish a consistent bedtime routine to wind things down. We can give our little one a soothing bath or read him some bedtime stories before sleeping.

As for the nightmares, you can talk to your toddler in a soothing voice and rubbing his back while telling him that his dreams are not real and he should go to sleep again. Be more patient as he would also need some time to understand the difference between dream and reality.

15-month-old Feeding

As you serve your toddler with three meals and two snacks a day, this is how you can estimate how much food you can serve your toddler. As suggested by professional doctors, most toddlers would need around 1000 calories every day or 40 calories for each 2.5cm of his height.

Alternatively, you can provide around a quarter size of an adult portion. Here’s how you can estimate the portion to serve based on each food category.

Simply be more creative and experimental when you are feeding your toddler. This little one loves food that looks interesting and appealing. On the side note, here are some other tips that you can look into while feeding your toddler.

As mentioned above, it is essential to feed your toddler with milk or iron-rich food to avoid him from growth delay and even anaemia.

Key Milestones In Growth

How should your 15-month-old toddler grow in terms of weight and height? Here are the averages that you can expect from your fifteen-month-old baby.

  • Weight: Around 9.61 kg for a 15-month-old baby girl and 10.29 kg for a 15-month-old baby boy
  • Height: Around 77.47 cm for a 15-month-old baby girl and 79.25 cm for a 15-month-old baby boy

Moving on to his second year, it is common to have your toddler having a slower growth rate. Around this month, your toddler might start to have his first molar erupting. Though it might not be comfortable, do use safe soothing items such as teething ring. Never use any type of teething gel or non-proven medication to reduce the discomfort of teething.

Key Milestones in Skill Development and Senses

Key Milestones in Movement

  • walks along and begins to run
  • squats to pick up an object
  • able to climb on furniture
  • can drink from a cup
  • can stack toy blocks into a short tower
  • imitate activities such as housework

At his fifteenth month, your toddler loves to move around exploring his surroundings. While this helps to increase his muscle strength and refine balance, he is going to develop better fine motor skills. He is able to manipulate smaller objects.

On the other hand, you would notice your 15-month-old toddler likes to take a bite on both objects and people. Instead of feeling overwhelmed and punishing him immediately, let’s look into what are some potential causes and alternatives to reduce biting from your toddler.

Key Milestones in Five Senses

  • can say three to five words
  • can understand and follow simple commands
  • can point to one body part or object for attention
  • can make marks or scribble with a crayon
  • shows love to caregivers with hugs and kisses
  • acts more independently
  • can show empathy (looks sad when someone else is crying)

Unlike the previous months, your little one now starts to use objects more intentionally. No more banging and hitting the objects as he is going to imitate how the adults use certain objects. For instance, he is going to use a comb to brush a doll’s hair after seeing you combing your hair.

On the side note, your little one is going to gain more insights about social interactions. By now, he is going to experiment with different behaviour to see which one attracts your attention the most. Once he realises which behaviour gets positive responses from you, he is going to repeat the behaviour.

15-Month-Old Baby Activities

As your little one continues to experiment with his surroundings, his body is getting stronger and more coordinated. In order to support his growth and development, what we should do is to support and encourage him. Instead of interfering when he is frustrated, he will learn more and better if he tries to solve the problem by himself.

Thus, simply give him more time to try out and observe him continually to ensure his safety. Below are some activity ideas that you can try out with your 15-month-old toddler. With this, he will be able to develop and enhance his developmental skills.

Besides keeping your toddler occupied with interesting activities, you should keep book reading as one part of his daily routine. With this, your toddler will be able to develop his language and vocabulary skills better as compared to his non-reading peers.

While there are different book varieties available in the market, we would strongly recommend you to look for board books for your toddler.

Here’s why.

The Fifteen Month Old Developmental Milestones Is All About Establishing Routine

This is a delightful age when your toddler is going to be more active and curious. Thus, never overreact whenever your toddler is showing deviant and destructive behaviour as this is just a part of his overall development.

Simply establish routines for daily tasks with your toddler so that it would be less frustrating for both you and your toddler.
