Breastfeeding Positions All Mums and Babies Can Benefit From

breastfeeding positions

If you’re a mother with a newborn, chances are that you’ll be breastfeeding your precious little one. It can be a bit daunting, especially if this is your first child.

However, there’s no right or wrong breastfeeding positions. As long as your child latches on, is comfortable and you’ re supporting their head and neck firmly, there shouldn’t be any major issues.

Therefore, we have listed down some of the most common breastfeeding positions for you to try with your child.

The Cradle Hold

This is one of the most common breastfeeding positions you’ll see. In this position, your baby lies on their side, facing your chest and with their tummy touching yours. The upper parts of their body should be supported by your forearm.

This position can be strenuous, since you’re holding your baby throughout their feeding session. Therefore, it’s good to invest in a feeding pillow, or place a narrow pillow beneath your arm to provide extra support. Having this pillow will also avoid sore nipples due to a strained latch.

Lying Back or Reclining

For this position, you should lie down in a reclining position with the upper part of your body elevated. Do not lie flat on a surface. Instead, use cushions and pillows to prop your head and upper body. You can lie on the headboard of a bed or on a long sofa.

Next, place your baby on your stomach, with their tummy touching yours.  Make sure that you’re reclined at an angle where you can still have eye contact with your baby. Support your baby and guide them to your nipple. They should naturally crawl up and latch themselves onto your nipple.

Lying On Your Side

This position is especially useful for mums who are recovering from a caesarean section or stitches. It involves both you and your baby lying down side by side on a bed or spacious sofa. Subsequently, you may guide your baby to face you and latch on.

This position is one of the most relaxing and is perfect for night time feedings too.

The Rugby Hold

The Rugby Hold is yet another great position for mothers who have undergone caesarean procedures. This is because it does not put any pressure or contact on the front of your belly. Instead, you should lay a pillow along your side.

Start by sitting up straight. Next, place your baby with their head facing your chest and on par with your nipples. Then, place their body along your side with their feet facing the back of the chair, sofa or whatever surface you’re sitting on.

Lastly, support their head and guide them to suckle on your breast.

Don’t Fret Over Breastfeeding Positions

Remember that the whole objective of breastfeeding is to provide your child with the best nutrition. Additionally, you want to bond with your baby too. Therefore, there really is no standard that you need to fulfil.

In conclusion, as long as you and your child are comfortable, that’s all you need to fulfil to have a satisfying breastfeeding experience. Of course, if you find more positions than the ones listed here, do feel free to try them out.
