First Trimester: Week 8

How your baby’s growing

New this week: Your baby’s hands and feet are developing webbed fingers and toes, his eyelids almost cover his eyes, breathing tubes extend from his throat to the branches of his developing lungs, and his “tail” is just about gone. In his brain, nerve cells are branching out to connect with one another, forming primitive neural pathways. You may be daydreaming about having a boy or a girl, but the external genitals still haven’t developed enough to reveal your baby’s sex. (Try our Chinese gender predictor for an early guess!) Either way, your baby — about the size of a kidney bean — is constantly moving and shifting, though you still can’t feel it.

What your baby looks like — 8 Weeks

Brain: The nerve cells in your baby’s brain are branching out to connect with one another, forming primitive neural pathways.

Eyelid: Translucent eyelids now practically cover your baby’s eyes.

Hand: Your baby’s hands are flexed at the wrist and meet over the heart. The fingers are still slightly webbed but growing longer.

Knee joint: Your baby now has knees, and her feet may be long enough to meet in front of her body.

 

What is happening to my Baby?

Your baby is continuing to grow. By now, he has all the organs like an adult. The ears are gradually forming. Your baby’s head is larger compared to the other parts at the moment and the baby’s face is beginning to take shape. The baby’s sex is already determined by this stage but still could not be seen from ultrasound. At this stage, your baby is only the size of a bean!
What is happening to me?
There may not be obvious changes but you will notice subtle changes to your body. Your clothes may be tight around the breast and waist. Your blood volume has already increased by up to 40 – 50% ! You may also start to feel more tired than usual.
What should I plan this week?
  • Start reading up on pregnancy books. Visit a nearby bookstore or buy online.  You could also google online regarding pregnancy.
  • If you notice vaginal bleeding at this stage. Go and see your doctor immediately. Take note of the amount of bleeding, the colour of bleeding (brown or fresh red) and other associated symptoms such as abdominal pain.There are several causes of bleeding in early pregnancy. Please refer to the section on Bleeding in early pregnancy. If you have a history of recurrent miscarriage or your doctor diagnose you to have threatened miscarriage, talk to your doctor about a medication called Duphaston to support your pregnancy.
Tips of the week
Coping with tiredness during pregnancy:
  • Eat healthy and balanced food
  • Breathing exercises
  • Try to get enough of sleep at least 8 hours / night
  • Take afternoon naps
  • Do exercises
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Avoid sleeping pills or stimulants such as caffeine or alcohol
