Once, a Harvard professor called it “pure poison”. This was said in a lecture by Karin Michels, entitled, “Coconut oil & Other Nutritional Errors,” back in 2018. However, coconut oil has gotten a makeover in recent years. According to the British Nutrition Foundation,
Coconut oil can be included in the diet, but as it is high in saturated fats should only be included in small amounts and as part of a healthy balanced diet,
Coconut oil has a wide array of health benefits. I believe that most of us only know coconut oil as part of our hair and skin uses. But do you know how beneficial and useful it is in our cooking?
The Good Fat in Cooking
When we cook, the heat, along with light and oxygen, can destroy the beneficial fats in some oils. Coconut oil is mainly saturated fat, in which it is able to withstand the higher temperatures than the other oils. Thus, making it one of the best oils for cooking.
It also gives a delicious taste and superb texture to foods. Use organic extra-virgin coconut oil for the best quality.
Rich in Lauric Acid
Coconut oil is rich in lauric acid. This fatty acid in coconut oil can kill harmful bacteria, viruses and fungi. It could potentially help to prevent infections in our body.
Fun fact: Coconut oil is the richest source of lauric acid, after breastmilk!
Helps in Digestion
The thick concentration of beneficial fats in coconut oil makes it helpful in our digestion. It also appears to be especially effective at reducing belly fat! Now that’s a natural remedy to get back your S-line mommies!
Improves our Heart Health
Coconut oil can also help in improving our heart’s health. Based on a research conducted on 116 coronary artery disease patients, it was observed that a diet rich in extra virgin coconut oil led to an increase in good cholesterol levels (HDL cholesterol) and decrease in bad cholesterol levels (LDL cholesterol). However, it is advisable for us to keep on track with our cholesterol level regularly. If our cholesterol level is increasing, it is better for us to stop or cut down on it!
Many research studies suggest that the use of oil pulling is very effective against various dental issues. Based on a study titled “Oil pulling for maintaining oral hygiene – A review”, oil pulling using coconut oil helps to remove the plaque building bacteria which causes dental caries, gingivitis, periodontitis and bad breath. Thus, our gums become pink, healthier, and bleeding gums is solved!
Indeed, coconut oil provides a lot of health benefits to us. I think its time for mommies to use coconut oil instead of your daily cooking oil! For a start, try this simple recipe courtesy of Chef Obie.
