Understanding the First 1,000 Days The programme also features a sharing session by Consultant Paediatrician Dr Ryan Ng, who helps parents better understand why the first 1,000 days represent one of the most important periods in a child's development. During the session, parents gain insights into how the brain develops, the role of myelination in helping the brain process information more efficiently, and the importance of everyday experiences such as talking, reading and playing being critical in building strong brain connections. The session also explores executive function, a set of skills that help children focus, solve problems, adapt to new situations and regulate their behaviour. Dr Ryan Ng, Consultant Paediatrician at 123 Child Specialist Clinic, introduced myelination as a key process that helps the brain transmit information more efficiently and explored the role of nutrition, such as sphingomyelin and DHA, in supporting children’s healthy brain development. "The first 1,000 days are a remarkable period of growth because children’s brains develop faster during this time than at any other stage of life," said Dr Ryan Ng, Consultant Paediatrician, 123 Child Specialist Clinic. "Many parents think brain development is determined by big milestones, but it is often the small everyday quality moments that matter most. Simple activities such as talking, reading, playing and exploring together help build important brain connections that support learning and development in children." Dr Ryan also highlighted the importance of providing children with a strong foundation through nutrition, stimulation and a nurturing environment.
