191 cases of acute gastroenteritis has been reported in the district of Tenom from June 2 to June 13, with a majority being children. Out of that number, 153 received outpatient treatment and 37 were hospitalised; 4 of which are still in clinical care but stable. According to Sabah Health Department director, Datuk Dr Asits Sanna, acute gastroenteritis (AGE) is an intestinal infection that presents itself as symptoms of diarrhoea, vomiting and fever. It is notoriously common among children. The side effect is usually dehydration but can be fatal if left untreated. Out of the 19 laboratory samples collected from victims, 16 showed positive for Rotavirus, a notable culprit of AGE. Dr Asits is now leading the investigation to determine the source of the viral outbreak which he believes may come from contaminated, untreated water. He urges the public to be remain vigilant in terms of personal hygiene until the issue is resolved. This includes washing hands thoroughly, cooking food properly, drinking clean, boiled water and getting treatment as soon as symptoms appear.
