Update on Early Year One Entry (22 January 2026) As part of the rollout of the National Education Plan 2026 - 2035, the government has clarified how the optional entry for six-year-olds into Year One will work. Children wishing to start Year One at age six from 2027 will not be automatically enrolled based on age alone and instead, they will be required to undergo a diagnostic assessment to determine readiness. This screening is intended to assess cognitive, emotional and learning preparedness before pupils can be admitted early. The policy remains optional and is designed to support parents in making informed decisions based on their child’s development rather than age alone.
