Giving birth can lead to excessive energy and blood loss, therefore, making a mother weak. Often, mothers frequently ask questions about what to eat during their confinement period to help restore back their energy. This confinement period is known to be important for mothers to recover from childbirth and they are supposed to carefully follow the postnatal diet.  One of the main components to produce breast milk is blood, and delivering a baby will lead to low production of milk due to the loss of blood. So mothers, what do you have to eat during your confinement period?

  1. Don’t forget your Protein! (fiber and vitamins)

Fish, chicken and red meat are high in protein. Chicken and red meat on the other hand may lead to constipation, so, you can try consuming fish. It is recommended for you to eat lots of fish for the first two weeks.

So, what is protein for? Protein is needed to help build new cells, especially for your organs and for mothers who are torn during childbirth.

 

  1. Drink 8 glasses of water per day!

Plain water is very important for the production of breast milk and digestion. It is recommended for you to drink boiled water and if you can, drink 8 glasses of water and above. Remember to drink more water moms!

 

  1. Steamed, Grilled, Braised

Make sure you consume foods which are steamed, grilled or braised. These cooking styles will help mothers absorb a good amount of nutrients into the body. Fatty, oily and fried food will slower down the recovery process.
  1. Vegetables and Fruits? Yes or No?

There are myths about veges where some people say that they can’t eat veges because it’s cooling. Now, what are cooling veges? Cucumber is considered as one. It is best if you can avoid vegetables like this because you may fall sick. However, it depends on the mom itself, if one mom can eat cucumber and feel okay with it, then the particular mom can continue eating cucumber.

Same goes to other vegetables and fruitsIt is best to not eat tropical fruits because they are heaty. For example, banana and nangka. Tropical fruits are also high in sugar. So, it is best if you consume imported fruits. Anyhow, it depends on the body of the mom itself. 

 

  1. Snacking every two hours.

Mothers are recommended to eat every two hours. Either main meals or snacks. But, it is important for you to consume healthy snacks such as lactose biscuits, yoghurt and fruits.

 

  1. Spicy and salty food

Avoid spicy and salty food like seafood. Spicy and salty food will only disturb the recovery process of your body so it is best to eat like normal after 40 to 60 days.
