Feeding your baby is never an easy thing.\u00a0Your child will achieve some pretty amazing\u00a0milestones\u00a0during their first three years and their transition from a\u00a0suckling bub\u00a0to\u00a0ravenous toddler is one of the most fascinating and messy parts of their development journey.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nWondering when to start them on solids, how long it will be until they can feed themselves, and when they\u2019ll stop making such a mess in the process? Here are the answers.\r\n\r\nJust remember: while these\u00a0\u2018milestones\u2019 are a useful guide, babies develop in the same order but at completely different rates. The time frames here are a general guide only.\r\n\r\nIf you have any concerns about your baby\u2019s development, talk to a health professional.\r\n0-3 \u00a0months\r\nYour baby will receive their nutrition exclusively from breast milk or formula, or a combination of the two.\r\n\r\nFeeding milestones\r\n\r\n \tHas a natural ability to root, suck, swallow and gag.\r\n \tFrom birth, your baby\u2019s reflexes will allow her to turn her head to suckle when you touch her cheek.\r\n\r\n3-6 months\r\nBreast milk or formula still provides all the nutrition your baby needs, but you\u2019ll begin to notice signs they are getting ready to try solids.\r\n\r\nFeeding milestones\r\n\r\n \tAbility to chew by five to six months.\r\n \tCan sit upright in a highchair.\r\n \tIs able to grab at a piece of food with the palm of their hand, curl their fingers around it and move it in the general direction of their mouth.\r\n\r\n6-9 months\r\nThese are the exciting months when solids are introduced. They\u2019ll also enjoy finger foods such as pieces of soft fruit, cooked vegetables and toast, all of which will encourage self-feeding.\r\n\r\nTry feeding them:\r\n\r\n \tground up meats and chicken.\r\n \tcereals such as whole rice, couscous and pasta \u2013 though delay these if you have a family history of wheat-based allergies.\r\n \tyoghurt\r\n \ta little cow\u2019s milk added to cereal or food such as custard.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nFeeding milestones\r\n\r\n \tBy 12 months they can pick up a small object such as a grapes by pincering with thumb and forefinger.\r\n \tPoints to or reaches for food when hungry.\r\n \tUses lips to get food off spoon and swallows with lips closed.\r\n\r\n12-18 months\r\nAt 12 months, you can introduce cow\u2019s milk to your baby\u2019s diet. At this stage they\u2019ll be able to eat coarsely textured foods, including meat, and will be moving towards a family diet.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nFeeding milestones\r\n\r\n \tBites food well.\r\n \tEats coarsely chopped foods, including meats and raw vegetables.\r\n \tStarts to chew with lips closed.\r\n \tCan drink from a cup without dribbling.\r\n \tCan feed themselves using a spoon, dropping some food off the spoon.\r\n\r\n18-24 months\r\nA well-balanced daily diet for you toddler should include the following:\r\n\r\n \tVegetables \u2013 two to four serves.\r\n \tFruit \u2013 one to two serves.\r\n \tDairy foods (milk, cheese, yoghurt) \u2013 three serves.\r\n \tMeat, eggs, fish, lentils, etc. \u2013 one to two small serves.\r\n \tBreads, cereals, rice and pasta \u2013 three to five serves.\r\n \tEggs \u2013 limit to one a day.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nFeeding milestones\r\n\r\n \tChews with jaw movements that go round and round, as well as up\/down and side to side.\r\n \tScoops foods with a spoon, with some spills.\r\n \tStarts to stab at foods with a fork and get them to their mouth.\r\n\r\n2-3 years\r\nToddlers can become very fussy about their food around this time. They develop distinct likes and dislikes that can try the patience of any parent.\r\n\r\nIf your child refuses dinner, try these tips:\r\n\r\n \tAvoid cordials and too much fruit juice as these are high in sugar and take away the appetite for other foods.\r\n \tDon\u2019t serve too much food \u2013 it\u2019s better for them to ask for more if still hungry than have them sit with a mountain of uneaten food on their plate.\r\n \tDon\u2019t use dessert as a bribe to eat the rest of the meal \u2013 it rarely works and can often lead to more resistance over dinner.\r\n \tIf your toddler rejects everything you put on their plate, try placing all the meal\u2019s food on communal plates in the centre of the table and encourage them to serve themselves.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nFeeding milestones\r\n\r\n \tFeeds themselves well with a spoon and fork.\r\n \tCan wipe their mouth and hands with a napkin or cloth.\r\n \tIs starting to serve themselves at the table with some spills.\r\n \tCan pour liquids into their cup from a small container.\r\n\r\nEvery nutrition that you provide to your baby from the day they starts to grow in your belly is very important.
